Delicious but NOT a good diet food,
By Renee Thorpe (Karangasem, Bali) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clif Bar Energy Bar, Variety Pack of Crunchy Peanut Butter, Chocolate Chip Peanut Crunch, and Oatmeal Raisin Walnut, 2.4-Ounce Bars, Pack of 24 (Health and Beauty)
These rich, nicely textured bars taste better than any other energy/supplement bar out there, but so does a Snickers!
Granted, this product is a true "health food" in that there are no refined sugars and many of the ingredients are organic. Nice to include trace minerals and lots of vitamin C and E. But it's an energy bar for feeding an active body. Clif qualifies as a food substitute on some levels... as in case of sustained strenuous activity or if you are traveling in a country with lack of hygienic food service. But it's loaded with sodium (as much as 210 mg), fat (around 6 gms), and sugars (20 g). Great if you are rock-climbing like that athletic fellow on the package. NOT great if you are a car-driving, tv-watching, immobile dieter. Couch potatoes would do well to stay on carrot sticks, and earn Clif bar privileges once a heavy exercise regime is in place. It is recommended that consumer drink a large quantity of water with every Clif bar, and perhaps that, with their hefty fiber content, is why they can be so satisfying. But people with big appetites will probably be tempted to eat more.

I agree with other reviewers about the sugar in these Clif bars. But I still find them a very satisfying snack. All the flavors are VERY dense in texture so they're quite chewy. You don't need to have something to drink while eating one, but it sure helps. The flavor is pretty good, too. But I find the labeling a little deceptive. The one labeled "Crunchy Peanut Butter" isn't any different in consistency or texture than the rest.

Taste great. Very filling snack n' the hydration pack that DO NOT MELT like other high protein exercise bars. The only exercise snack bars that I carry while inline skating.

Our family uses Clif Bars as a breakfast replacement when we are short of time. Clif bars are higher in fiber and protine then the usual varieties of breakfast bars sold in stores. I like that they are sweetened with brown rice syrup instead of high fructose corn syrup. My children love them, we go through about 30 a month. The variety pack worked well for us as each of us liked one of the flavors. This is a product we have used faithfully for years, the best part was the super saver shipping-I normally have to drive 20 minutes away to get them for a decent prive.

While I would not suggest using this in place of meals ALL THE TIME, you could do far worse when you need quick energy before or after a workout or if your kids need a snack. This is far healthier than chips or foods full of chemicals. Plus, there are significant amounts of vitamins and other nutritional ingredients. Each bar (although I think they are more like a combination of "bar" and "chewy cookie") has a significant amount of calcium, protein and 100% of many vitamins needed for the day. For that reason, I would not dole them out like candy, because there could be a possibility of overdoing it on the vitamins - you don't need 500% of certain vitamins, for instance, which you could get if you ate enough of these bars.
However, 2 or even 3 of these a day aren't likely to do any harm and they'll provide nutrition as well as a satisfying snack. Trace minerals are also there in impressive amounts. At 250 calories a bar, however, you might want to maintain a limit on your consumption of these per day, unless you burn a LOT of calories. Also, if you are watching your weight, you know you get a craving for cookies or something sweet. These aren't overly sweet and they don't have that awful chemical taste of other "nutrition" bars, the ones where you get no pleasure in eating them. These are tasty and filling. All in all, a winner!

Filling and good for you. Incrediable, far better than the fake candy bars flooding the market these days.

About what you would expect, Clif Bars are awesome. I wish there was more variety in the box, and I didn't like the Oatmeal Raisin Walnut bar. It tasted very mineral-y.

I'm a slight woman at 110 lbs with a huge appetite and a killer commute at times. Believe me when I say I've tried other nutrition bars. These are by far my favorite! I always have cliff bars in the glove compartment to keep me going for up to 6 hours if I don't have time to stop for a real meal or around food that I can't eat. And it has organic ingrediants as compared to a lot of other highly processed bars. Plus, they are affordable at under a $1 each, have a pleasant taste, and keep me satiatied when I'm too busy to sit down.

I first tried these when given one in a complimentry bag prior to a half-marathon. I've been buying them ever since. CLIF bars give me a good amount of energy which is peculiar since when things are supposed to effect you in some way don't for me. I like to snack consistently through the day, and when I eat one of these I'm not hungry for quite a while. I'm a extremely "picky" eater, & I prefer these over any of a similar type. But i do have friends who find these revolting. Its a matter of preference, I suggest buying one or two of different types and trying them out.

These were just what I needed. As a hurried college student with stressful morning classes, sometimes I get so obsessed with my work that I might have to miss lunch or breakfast. That is why God created the soul who invented these! Cliff Bars are packed with protein, have natural ingredients, and have an excellent flavor to them. I dip them in soymilk when I use them for an on-the-go breakfast. I eat them with fruit (e.g., apple or banana) when I don't have time to sit around and enjoy a big lunch. If you're as busy as person as me, these will compliment your routine very well.
There are only two drawbacks to Cliff Bars. First, since they are made of oatmeal and peanut butter, they tend to dry out your insides. Be sure to drink milk, juice or water when eating them or you'll have some trouble passing the snack down your digestive tract. Don't try and test me on this one, or you'll definitely find out what I'm referring to. The other drawback I see with Cliff Bars is that the oatmealy/peanut-buttery flavor leaves an annoying aftertaste in the back of your throat, which takes a couple of hours to get rid of. When you eat them, it's as if you had a crunchy peanut butter sandwich but put too much of it on the bread. This aftertaste takes a bit of getting used to and might bother some people who aren't used to eating protein snacks. Still, I enjoy eating my Cliff Bars. Now that I've tried them, I really don't know how I could get around without them! Thank's Cliff! |
