I had this ear guard for a few months and I have used several other (cheaper) ear guards. I think for wrestling, this ear guard is as good as it gets. It is really light and fits very comfortably. Another reviewer stated that it was a bit tight but I cannot imagine how that is possible because you can adjust all aspects of the guard. You can simply wipe it clean after use and it does not smell.

One thing, however, is that the ear part sticks out of the rest of the gear rather abruptly instead of rising gradually. This has presented me with some issues because it provides a handle that the opponent can hold onto. I discovered this ear guard made it a bit more difficult for me to squeeze out of guilotine or Peruvian necktie variety chocks compared to other ear guards when the opponent clamps down with the elbow. So I am taking one star off.

In short, it has a minor flaw for submission grapplers. Otherwise, I think it is pretty much perfect.

As we head into another wresting season, this is the first year I don't need to buy another set of head gear to "try." We got this last year and it was perfect! It never slipped and my son loved it. I felt so bad watching the other kids with the slipping head gear -- or worse -- the kids without any!! Get this if your looking at the different headgears ... it has been the BEST for us!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great protection for Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, February 6, 2008

I'm an audio engineer, and aural protection is a MUST! I put off buying headgear for a few months when I first started training. Finally, I decided I should get a pair, and I'm very glad I did! No more sore ears! Headgear doesn't choke, hurt your partner, slip too much, easy to clean, and offers great protection for your ears.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breat for BJJ, May 27, 2009

I was looking for a headgear that would stay in place for my BJJ class. Got this one and I am very pleased with it. It stays put as it should, it is pretty comfortable and definitely does its job of protecting your ears. I was starting to get sore ears after rolling (with no headgear) but now that's history.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, Not Great, Slips, August 18, 2011

I bought this headgear to replace an older Adidas adiStrike set that was wearing out. I've been using headgear while training Gracie Jiu-jitsu. I had two main issues with the adiStrike that I hoped to address with the CK Tornado: uncomfortable chin strap and headgear slippage.

On the chin strap comfort, the CK Tornado definitely fits the bill. They provide a piece of coated foam that has curved cutouts in the middle. For someone like me, with a pronounced adam's apple, this greatly improves the comfort. That said, it's also a bit slippery and must be worn tighter than I'd prefer. The first sparring session that I wore it resulted in pretty good chaffing of the chin as I didn't secure it well enough (or so it seems).

On the issue of headgear slippage I've been rather disappointed. The adiStrike had fabric over the ears, which seemed to keep things in place better (I'd read several reviews of it where people complained of slippage). The CK Tornado, in contrast, has plastic-coated foam padding around the ears, which is very comfortable, but slips a lot once the sweat starts pouring out. I've had to readjust the 4 velcro straps several times to try and address the problem.

Along these lines, another major issue is that the velcro doesn't seem to hold very well. More than once it's pulled apart (once on the chin strap, a couple times on top) in the middle of sparring. Part of this is likely due to the additional friction caused by Gi contact, but it's still nonetheless a bit disappointing. I'll continue to tweak it, but at the current rate I will probably look at replacing this headgear with the CK Twister to see if it performs better.

To summarize: it's comfortable headgear, but definitely not slip-free, which leads me to not fully endorse it, at least not for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great headgear. Doesn't slip., February 18, 2009

This is really nice headgear. It doesn't slip, and is comfortable to wear.
My cauliflower ear problems are a thing of the past!

That said, there is one design flaw on this product. The Velcro straps on the top of the headgear tend to scratch up my partners up during free-training.

Other then that, this thing rocks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product for wrestling and cauliflower ear prevention, December 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this for my 8 going on 9 yr old son. I was a little hesitant at first because it was an adult head gear, buy my son's head measurement were close to the max measurements for youth head gear. This head gear is GREAT! The foam padding around the ear piece prevents opposing wrestlers from getting a grip on the head gear. My son had a wrestler try to grab in a match and he was not able to do so due to the construction of the head gear. It has a double strap on the top which assures a secure fit and placement when competing. I have seen many kids who have other brands of gear and their head gear will slide around during a match and even slip off. The straps are adjustable which allows for head growth as your wrestler gets older. It has a padded chin strap with sturdy snaps on either side of the chin so it is good for left or right handers. The ear pieces are perforated and allow for air circulation as well as allowing the athlete to hear well. I strongly recommend this product for wrestling and preventing cauliflower ear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome headgear, November 19, 2010

Love it. Comfortable and solid. The chin strap cushion ripped, but I don't mind. It still fits great. I generally only wear them when my ears get sore (smart, I know) and I don't feel anything with them on. You can hear fine too. I would definitely recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son says this headgear is the best!, March 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My son has been using this headgear exclusively for the last 6 years. He sees so many wrestlers with headgear "problems" and has never understood why they don't go with this one. It has never failed him and it fits great! It doesn't slide around. I aksed my son for a quote and he said, "It's the best headgear ever in the history of headgear!"
