5.0 out of 5 stars Reggae meets the 80's syth sound May 7, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Cliffhanger is a turning point in Cliff's music, where he moves from a more traditonal reggae sound (Bob Marley like) to a frenzied electronic sound which borrows a great deal from 80's pop music.
Cliffhanger's sound is Jimmy Cliff's biggest and grandest, showcasing an amazing variety of new reggae hooks that became the basis of much of the reggae music in the years following Cliffhanger's release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hitting On All Cylinders At A Crucial Time January 20, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Through the passage of time, the mid 1980's would become a spiteful punchline production wise when it came to a lot of renowned artists recording music during this period. Realize I say that a lot,but it needs to be said because that is where Jimmy Cliff stood during this era. What people don't often bring out is that this was also an era of a lot of rock charity events where the participants were seriously interested in making a difference. Cliff didn't even need to be contributing songs to Artists Against Apartheid (which he did anyway) to make his points. His music did,and always had, spoken for itself. And it did that here in a very telling way.

Right off the bat one can tell this album, again recorded and produced with the Kool & The Gang crew takes the contemporary musical spirit of Power & Glory to the next level with songs like "American Sweet","Arrival","Hot Shot" ,"Dead And Awake" and "Brown Eyes". These songs blend together a heavy 80's funk type of percussion, with a heavy electro flavor, often with rocking guitars and even a captivating bass solo by Jaco Pastorious on the latter. On "Hitting With Music","Reggae Street" and "Sunrise",with it's sunny synthesizer accents, have that classic reggae beat yet the production remains totally contemporary.

The passionate ballad "Now And Forever" is offset by another mid 80's production of classic reggae on "Nuclear War",beginning with a sound sample announcing "nuclear war is bad for your health" and going on to remind the listener the cataclysmic consequences of such an exchange and,as always,to value life itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars positive surprise April 18, 2003
By Sinitta
Format:Audio CD
This is the first time I hear a Jimmy Cliff album and I'm positively surprised. It's good reggae music mixed with 80spop. To one of my suprises La Toya Jackson wrote two songs: American Sweet and Brown Sugar. She already wrote his major hit "Raeggae nights", and if you liked that song, you will like this album too.
