4.0 out of 5 stars Four Cute Stories - a review of "Clifford's Big Book Of Stories", November 2, 2006
This review is from: Clifford's Big Book Of Stories (Hardcover)
This is a really cute collection of four Clifford stories. Three of these stories are adventures Clifford had when he was big, and one takes place during his puppyhood.

Titles:

Clifford the Big Red Dog

Clifford's Puppy Days

Clifford's Good Deeds

Clifford Gets a Job

The first story is actually an introduction to the characters of Emily Elizabeth and Clifford. It sort of outlines what life is like with a huge red dog. For example, how like other dogs, Clifford is naughty and sometimes chases cars; but how unlike other dogs, he can pick up an entire car and retrieve it.

The second story, from Clifford's days as a puppy, shows what life can be like with an extremely small dog. In this story, E.E.'s aunt accidentally ends up taking Clifford to a bakery where he escapes and (surprise!) creates havoc. There is a television version of this story that you might recall. In any case, it makes a nice contrast to the first story where Clifford is large.

The final two stories are united by a common theme wherein Clifford and Emily Elizabeth try to accomplish good deeds, and end up only creating trouble. For example, in one case they help a neighbor to paint her fence. The woman is delighted until Clifford wags his tail and accidentally knocks a can of paint over, splashing the woman's house. Oops. Each story ends however with Clifford saving the day and demonstrating that sometimes no matter how big we are, we face adversity, and there is nothing to do about it but keep trying.

Four Stars. [B+]. Good Read-aloud. Colorful, fun artwork. The drawings are typical Norman Bridwell and do not look like the artwork on the television show. The language in this book is fairly simple and can most likely be read by a second grader or even an advanced first grader. My two children really liked this book and the fact that there are four stories is nice.
