About the Author

There's no denying that kids love Clifford®. The Big Red Dog® has been a favorite since Norman Bridwell created him over 40 years ago. "I was working as a commercial artist in New York City. There wasn't much work, so I made some sample pictures and took them to several publishers. They all rejected my work. But one editor suggested that I try writing a book of my own to illustrate. I had done a painting of a little girl with a big red dog. That seemed like a funny idea, so I made up a story about them. I increased the dog's size from as big as a horse to as big as a house. My wife named the dog Clifford, and we named the little girl Emily Elizabeth after our daughter. In three days I had written the story and drawn the pictures for Clifford The Big Red Dog. When Scholastic called and said they wanted the book, I was stunned." Bridwell, who grew up in Kokomo, Indiana, lives now on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, with his wife, Norma. After buying four or five other suggested books meant to teach children to read (including the Bob set, which we hated), I was given this Clifford set as a gift. Almost overnight, my 4.5-year-old son started reading and hasn't stopped since. I'm not sure if it's the appeal of Clifford himself, the brightly colored and helpful images, or the way the books are actually written, but my son loves these books and takes enormous pride in getting through each of one of them. I strongly recommend them for any parent hoping to interest their child in beginning reading.

These Clifford readers are as good as any phonics readers I have seen, and they have the important feature that they star Clifford and his friends, beloved by children everywhere. There are two important things to remember when buying this (or another) set of beginning readers. First, be sure to buy the FIRST Clifford set first. (I made the mistake of buying Set 2 first, and quickly discovered that they were considerably more advanced than Set 1; the sets are really meant to be read in order.) Second, it is very important to keep in mind that your child will only be able to benefit from early readers once he or she is ready to read. I bought these for my son when he was not yet four years old. I would read them occasionally to him, but he had no interest whatsoever in trying to read them himself. But suddenly, about midway through kindergarten, he became very interested in learning to read. The Clifford books make it effortless to teach him. Each morning and evening we read a new Clifford book and he is so eager to do so. The stories are very sweet and star all of the characters from the TV show version of Clifford. In summary, if you're ready for a set of beginning readers, these are the ones I'd recommend.

This boxed book set was one of the best investments i ever made in trying to teach my son to read and understand new words. He absolutely loves these books! Each book adds new words and I can't say anything bad about it. They are awesome and my son is now reading and very proud of himself!! He is in 1st grade.

These are nice beginner readers, but if you are looking for a true set of phonics readers that take the steps very slowly this is not the one, This is a nice add on to a beginner reader program. But there are a lot of random words in the book other than the basic phonics and beginner sight words that you would expect from a very beginner set. The books get quit hard quickly. I still really like them, The children that have a good 20 or 30 sight word vocabulary and are reading at a very early 1st level can read these quit well. But these would be too frustrating for a child just learning to sound out cat and Rat.

an example:
book 11: F, -0p
Clifford is tops
1.My pop had a red car.
The red car did not go.
"oh, no!" said pop.
2.I said, "Stop, Clifford."
I said, "drop, Clifford.
Help my pop."
3.I said, "Hop on, Pop."
My pop ws up, up, up!
4.Clifford ran and ran.
He ran with Pop on top.
It continues for 4 more pages of reading. The books are 16 full-color pages. But there is only reading on every other page. Each time you turn the page there is reading on the right hand page and a picture on the left hand page.

The first 5 books or so in the series are a little easier than the last onse. I also have level two, which would be great for a first grade reader

I bought these as a gift for my 5 year old nephew - what a hit! He calls me on the phone so he can read them to me. His mother loves them too, she told me that other books were not keeping his interest, or were frustrating him, so that he wouldn't read them. She actually had to tell him they could call me back to read some more because he just wanted to read ALL the books to me at once! Highly recommend

Bought this set of early reading books for my four-year-old. At first, he enjoyed reading the books with his favorite Clifford characters. But unlike other early reader books, this set seems to have no didactic progress or consistent sight word identification. In addition, it includes names like "Emily Elizabeth" that are very hard for beginning readers to sound out. Save your money and get the "Bob" books or Starfall readers, which are much more effective at teaching kids to read.

I have a 3YO son who can read any word he can sound out like cat, sit etc.

I got this set because I wanted what it promised - Phonics - LEVEL ONE. That is, words that can be sounded out, without having to learn about exceptions.

Sure, it has those words in it. But it mixes them up with words like "Emily", "friends", "funny", "fast, "race", "down", "house".

A key to learning anything is to take it one step at a time. This author does not know that.

So, this is not a level one book. It will be useful later on when he has learned a whole lot of rules and a bunch of other words. But by then, he won't need a book with only one or two sentences to a page.

I bought these for my 3&6yr.old. My 6 year old is in first grade and is learning how to read. These books kept his interest, on the first page they have words listed to go over before reading each book, it helps out with phonics and with new words. Very good books, I bought both sets, and my son and daughter love them. I'm looking forward to the next set due in April.
