Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Is cancer cure a matter of will? Diagnosis? Good doctors? Evans, who had them all, believes her indomitable will played a big part in her recovery, though she was given only a 15% chance of survival. On the fifth anniversary of her recovery, she celebrated by climbing Mount Aconcagua in the Andes. A type-A personality, she was both a successful sportswear designer and a lifelong sportswoman who had just discovered the thrills and chills of mountain climbing when she first felt the dreaded lump in her breast. Until then, she and her husband had enjoyed the good life in Sun Valley, Idaho. Several doctors they interviewed seemed too mechanical or too pessimistic. Finally, they found one who, while not understating the potentially lethal nature of her disease, offered a slim hope in an experimental bone-marrow transplant, adding that sometimes a strong will to live made a difference. Evans had the will and, regarding the disease as a challenge, underwent the painful treatments fearfully but with unswerving determination to survive. Here, she switches between detailed accounts of those treatments and narratives of her mountain-climbing efforts, drawing parallels between the two in a smoothly written, sometimes humorous inspirational account.

you'll like "No Mountain Too High, A Triumph Over Breast Cancer," which is the story of the 17 breast cancer survivors who comprised the core of Laura Evan's Expedition Inspiration. I was the journalist on the climb and had the honor of climbing with Laura and the other 16 women, as well as spending over two years researching their stories: from illness and treatment to recovery and rebuilding of their lives. Laura assembled a formidable team of women, all of whom became and remain good friends. Each year since the climb of Aconcagua, the team reconvenes for an annual reunion. Whether you have breast cancer or not, as I discovered from being with these incredible women, there are life lessons to be learned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breast Cancer and the Mountains, July 20, 2001
This review is from: The Climb of My Life: A Miraculous Journey from the Edge of Death to the Victory of a Lifetime (Hardcover)
I laughed and cried my way through this book of awesome will and determination. A must read for all women whether they face breast cancer or not. An inspirational book for women mountaineers. Laura's story of triumph is motivating to people in all walks of life. Her ultimate death in 2000 of a brain tumor is certainly not the last chapter in her life and legacy as the founder of Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
