From Library Journal
The Climber's Handbook provides the basics of rock and ice climbing, Alpine mountaineering, and Himalayan-style expeditions in an attractively packaged, relatively short volume. The three British authors (Ron Fawcett, Paul Nunn, and Alan Rouse, who was killed last year) and one American (Jeff Lowe) are all experienced and widely respected. Each section of the four begins with history, covers equipment and technique, and concludes with a general discussion. The Handbook is generously illustrated. The index is adequate, but be advised of the European orientation, e.g., abseil for rappel, karabiner for carabiner. There are useful ratings charts for British, U.S., and French climbs. Recommended for comprehensive collections. Thomas K. Fry, UCLA Libs.
