Book Description

As the title suggests, this is a strongly clinical book and each condition or group of conditions is described in terms of appropriate pathology, presenting features and treatment, down to what should be administered, in what dosage and for how long. Those making use of this book will find their needs met in full. This new edition combines the expertise of nearly fifty contributors who are not only recognised as experts in their fields, but who also see patients with tropical skin problems as part of their daily case load. In tropical dermatology, fungi are the prime suspects in cases of infection (as opposed to bacteria and viruses in temperate climates) and, therefore, the first major section covers myotic conditions, and is followed by bacteria, viruses and treponematoses. The second group of conditions covered are those caused by animals. This section covers protozoa (parasites transmitted by sanflies), helminths (worms) and other parasites. Snake bite is also covered in this section. Malnutrition is widespread and, in some tropical areas, AIDS is virtually endemic. The dermatological associations of both are covered in detail. Special space is also given to systemic diseases, problems specific to pigmented skin, the influence of the tropics on non-tropical conditions, and the eye in tropical disease. Differential diagnosis, a glossary, formulary and possible zoonoses (diseases from animals) round off the book. Described by the British Medical Journal in its first edtion as 'excellent and outstanding , the status of this volume as the dermatologists' reference of choice is confirmed. There is no work of comparable stature.
