Book Description

Railroads Past and Present June 20, 2008

Jerry Taylor and Ray Poteat take readers on a mile-by-mile trip through the tunnels and over the bridges of the historic CSX Clinchfield. Completed in 1915, the Clinchfield Railroad follows a scenic route through rugged mountain country in the eastern United States. Facing the challenge of this difficult terrain, engineers and more than 3,000 laborers built the railroad using construction standards unheard of at the time. The results were so durable and forward looking that for nearly a century there has been no need to enlarge its tunnels or strengthen its bridges. Though the Clinchfield is not well known outside its territory, its history and challenging construction have been continuing sources of fascination for rail fans.

"The Clinchfield is a unique segment of CSX for all the reasons cited in this book. It has a wide following, even today, among the railfan community, almost 25 years after its demise." -- C. K. Marsh, Jr., author of Clinchfield in Color

This review is from: The CSX Clinchfield Route in the 21st Century (Railroads Past and Present) (Hardcover)
My mother recently built a home near Spruce Pine, NC, and being a railfan, when I visited her I was very interested in the old Clinchfield line that went through the area. Well, this book is great for explaining everything you would want to know about the modern-day operations over the line. There are tons of details about trains, routes, landmarks, and even some of the equipment used--and it is relatively current (it was published just a few years ago).

1.0 out of 5 stars The CSX Clinchfield Route, for Clinchfield fans only only, August 4, 2008
This review is from: The CSX Clinchfield Route in the 21st Century (Railroads Past and Present) (Hardcover)
Unless you are a fan of the Clinchfield, AND a seasoned railroad fan, this lovely photographed volume may be lost on you. It was me. Most pictures are of 2 CSX grey/blue/yellow engines pulling cars of coal, as on the cover. A fair amount of unexplained railroad speak left me wondering, and tantalizing notions of rotary couplers, bottom dumps, or rotating car in action never shown nor explained. The author and photographer did a marvelous job with what they had to work with, but it appears this volume belongs with a series designed for the professional railroad man or highly knowlegable fan
