Product Description

Hands-Free. Safe driving. Truthfully, the safest place for your phone when you’re in the car is in the glove box, turned off. But since we all know that’s probably not what you’re going to do with it, doesn’t it make sense to put it someplace where it’s securely held and in plain sight? We think so. That’s where the Clingo Universal Hands-Free Mount comes in. Clingo keeps it in view. With windshield or dashboard mounting options, the Hands-Free Mount allows you to keep your phone where you can glance at it if you need to, without taking your attention from the road. The highly adjustable ball and socket joint and pivoting arm also provide the flexibility to get the viewing angle just right. And as always, the Clingo sticky pad holds your phone tightly, yet lets it go when you’re ready to have it back. Let your phone stick to Clingo, so you can stick to driving. Any phone, anywhere. It’s pretty simple, really. Clingo holds any phone. It doesn’t matter if it’s a BlackBerry, iPhone, Samsung, latest Droid or whatever. Whether in your car, at the office, at home, or wherever - Clingo holds it.

At first the suction cup wouldn't stick to the window and the pad didn't stick to my phone.

As the weather started to get hot (or perhaps as it started to get old), the Clingo pad began to leave a sticky residue on my phone.

Initially it worked, but within a few weeks (maybe a month) something happened and it started to look oily.

I was quite enjoying the tacky (in the sticky sense) simplicity of my Clingo mount, right up until I returned from a week away on my honeymoon to find that the pad had decomposed in the summer heat.

Didn't find this out the easy way, of course. I simply attached my phone, as I had been doing for three weeks or so prior, and later, when I went to remove it, it was stuck so fully to the pad that, upon removal, it took the majority of the top 'skin' of the Clingo surface with it. Took me a few minutes just to scrub the goo off of my iPhone case. Now, in the spots where the skin came off, the Clingo pad leaves a sticky residue on anything placed against it, essentially rendering the mount unusable.

I've both called Allsop directly and left a voicemail about the issue and sent an e-mail to their customer support line. After two weeks, neither has given me a response. Pretty unacceptable. I'm very disappointed.

Update: Allsop did eventually get back to me and provided two replacement pads free of charge. In order to try and preserve these new pads, I kept them in my glove compartment when not in use, and even re-applied the protective plastic sheet each time to keep detritus from building up on the surface. It worked fine up to a point, but the constant removal and re-installation of the pads on the mount eventually caused the plastic around the ball joint on the mount to break. I'm afraid the product is just not that durable. I appreciate Allsop's willingness to assist me with my issues, but this mount needs a re-design before I can recommend it.

Ever since this was announced I waited for it to come out and ordered it immediately when it became available. Bottom line is that the concept is a failure, at least for me. I tried this with my iPhone 4 and it just does not reliably hold the phone. I tried it while the phone was in an Incipio NGP matte case and it held for maybe 30 seconds. Fine, it does state that matte or textured cases do not work well with the device. Then I switched to a TPU (urethane) case and it held for about 3-4 minutes in a moving car and fell off again. Now the TPU case is not matte or textured and the urethane should have made a nice bond but it didn't.

Well, the final test was the caseless iPhone so the bond should be glass to clingo...and the phone fell after about 5 minutes. Mind you, all tests were conducted with a brand new clingo that had never been touched by fingers or come in contact with dirt or moisture...brand new out of the packaging.

The problem is exacerbated when you attach a car charger (I guess it creates some drag and additional weight). When I did that with the TPU case it lasted about 2 minutes before failure. I was not willing to do the test with the bare phone.

Bottom line is that the Clingo car mount utterly fails at its primary task which is holding you phone securely in your car. I had high hopes for this and really liked the concept, but I'm not willing to risk my phone and returned it to Amazon for a refund. Maybe an ultra lightweight phone will work, but certainly not the iPhone 4

Update 8/7/10

Well I spoke with Kelli Veening at Allsop and she was kind enough to send a replacement. The difference is like night and day. The new one holds my iPhone 4 very securely and it has not fallen yet.

I wanted to like this. It is stylish, light, easy to install, and promises a no-fault ease of operation that makes it compelling. For other users, it might be a great solution, but I have to review it vis-a-vis my phone, the HTC Evo 4G. If you are not familiar with it, the Evo is a large phone. However, it is relatively light so I had high hopes that it would work. It didn't.

First of all, the back of the Evo is slightly pourous in nature, making the Clingo complpetely unable to adhere to the phone for more than a minute or two. Second, when I put a case on the phone (plastic HTC case), it worked better but was not a full-proof adherence. Sometimes it would stay in place for the whole trip, other times it would fall off quickly. The Evo is simply too big.

Finally, in addition to falling off, the large size of the Evo caused the ball joint at the end to droop. The articulating arm has a screw in lock but the ball joint at the end is free-floating. As such, it was easy for the phone to point down, expecially if I hit a bump.

The Clingo is probably a great solution for an iPhone user and many other phones...it just doesn't work for the HTC Evo 4G, much to my shagrin. Some may say, then, that it is the phone that is the problem. You are right. However, I wouldn't market this as "All Cell Phones and Mobile Devices".

Think twice about buying this product. While it has worked for some people, there are equally as many people with bad experiences. My situation is the same as one of the other 1-star reviews. Initially it worked, but within a few weeks (maybe a month) something happened and it started to look oily. I'm guessing it was the heat like one other person said, but once it became oily it would still stick to things but it left a sticky residue on everything. I tried water, sticking it onto random objects to try and remove whatever was going on with the surface before using it, and nothing helped. It's been like this for weeks now and nothing I can do will fix it. It's essentially unusable in its current state. Cars get hot inside, if heat is actually what caused this to happen, then that is a major flaw with this product because there's no way anyone will want to take the mount with them every time they leave the car. I know I won't. If anyone has had better luck with other mounts I'd love some suggestions.
