Review

"...an invaluable source of information for diverse medical professionals in the field of sleep medicine." -- Doody's Health Sciences Book Review Journal

From the Publisher

This portable version of the most comprehensive clinical reference on the fundamental aspects of the science of sleep emphasizes the clinical information needed in daily practice. Formatted for maximum accessibility, the Companion Handbook includes generous tables and lists. Readers of the Companion Handbook will benefit from the expertise of the main text without having to sift through the basic science in order to extract the material needed for a particular patient. This concise handbook includes information on the technical methods of recording for diagnosis and classification of sleep disorders, and a clinical approach to patients with sleep complaints. Also emphasized are in-depth descriptions of a variety of sleep disorders and sleep disturbances following neurologic, medical, and psychiatric events. Recognition of the importance of sleep disorders has increased significantly and this is the ideal book for clinicians in a variety of disciplines who need to learn about the medicine of sleep disorders in order to best treat their patients.

5.0 out of 5 stars companion handbook to sleep disorders medicine, October 12, 2000

This review is from: Clinical Companion to Sleep Disorders Medicine Second Edition (Paperback)
This is the condensed or rather concentrated version of the large and definitive book by Dr. Chokroverty. It covers virtually all of the field of sleep medicine without the tedious proofs and references seen in a large book. This is ideal for review of the field or just to quickly look up a topic. Residents rotating through sleep medicine would find it ideal. Dr. Chokroverty must be an exellent teacher since he writes so clearly and succently. I read it in about eight hours just before taking my sleep boards and found it most valualble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it!, November 27, 2000
This review is from: Clinical Companion to Sleep Disorders Medicine Second Edition (Paperback)
Don't expect to see pictures in this book, just good, well-written information. This book gives the reader exactly what they need, in a cut-to-the-chase format. If the font was a little smaller and the book dimensions reduced a bit, medical students could carry it in their lab coat pocket during their "required" sleep rotation (ok, I can dream). Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise, authoritative, and in-depth, March 11, 2004

This review is from: Clinical Companion to Sleep Disorders Medicine Second Edition (Paperback)
This is my new-favorite sleep manual. It is well written, well designed (layout), and very comprehensive yet concise. All 21 chapters deal with specific subject matters in <15 pages each. A summary/conclusion follows the information for each subject. This book does not cover some topics related to the clinical process; ie. scoring(the explanation of example epochs of raw data) or mask-fitting. By doing so, I believe the author sought to avoid the inclusion of material that will require revision in the near future. Nor does this book include a bunch of talk of brain function or metabolism at the sub-cellular level. This book is a definitive sleep manual for techs and PCP's wanting to have a background in sleep physiology, disorders, and health complications related to sleep disorders. Learn this book and you'll gain the confidence that accompanies having a solid foundation of knowlege about sleep and sleep disorders. Another attractive aspect of this manual is its low-price (in comparison to other texts on sleep). If you get a scoring atlas and this book, you'll have a good start to your sleep library.
