5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference book!
When I first saw this book I got scared because of the size and weight of it, but when I finally got the courage to open it and start reading it, it surprised me! I found this book to be really good and the pictures are great and help out a lot. The case studies at the end of each chapter are really great and got me to understand more and think about the content of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not all it could be
This book has become almost a standard text. But it has problems. For one, the index fails to list much of what's in the book. For instance, kallikrein, an important cytokine in coagulation, is not listed in the index, though it is talked about in the text. Abbreviations are introduced without a hint of what they stand for. The complexities of hemostasis are not...

When I first saw this book I got scared because of the size and weight of it, but when I finally got the courage to open it and start reading it, it surprised me! I found this book to be really good and the pictures are great and help out a lot. The case studies at the end of each chapter are really great and got me to understand more and think about the content of the chapter, which by doing that helped me to remember!! Also the last part of the book: Laboratory methods, was a great help to me both in preparing for class and when it came to writing the report, the book tells you step by step how the procedures are done. I will always keep this book for reference as I know it will help in during my career as a lab technongist.

This book has become almost a standard text. But it has problems. For one, the index fails to list much of what's in the book. For instance, kallikrein, an important cytokine in coagulation, is not listed in the index, though it is talked about in the text. Abbreviations are introduced without a hint of what they stand for. The complexities of hemostasis are not well-explained. And the process of clotting is not well-organized. A good editor would have helped the authors produce a better book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for introductory hematology., February 13, 2011
This book is a good book for introductory Hematology courses. It's odd in that the key terms are not bolded in the text. But if you can look pass this and not mind the very simple, almost bland in text pictures, it's a good book to use. The text is simpler and easier to read compared to some introductory hematology books, except for the cytokine and interleukin parts, but those topics are harder to digest in general. Not a lot of case studies question per chapter, but there are self test multiple choice questions per chapter. I haven't compared this edition with the newer edition, my teacher accepts both editions, so not a bad deal.

I was hesitant about buying a used book but if I hadn't bought it that way I never would have guessed it was used!

4.0 out of 5 stars Clinical Hematology and Fudamentals of Hemostasis, December 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The book was very helpful for my Hematology class and my professor loves it! (So much so that he uses the questions from the book word for word!) The pictures did fall out of the binding after a few uses but all in all I loved this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy unless you're studying to become a doctor, November 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Details are very in-depth. Not recommended as a tool for an introductory hematology course because of its abundant in-depth details which causes a loss of emphasis on main concepts and characteristics. Great for students studying to become doctors, but not recommended for med-techs or patho-assistants. Not a good reference book in a diagnostic lab either, so don't keep it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a good text for beginners (i.e. lab techs), May 2, 2010
I am currently using this book in my hematology course. It is incredibly thorough, that's for sure. However, it's way over my head. I stopped regularly using it after the first couple of months of class and used other materials. They don't tell you that the book is for lab techs, med techs, and pathology residents. So, if you are a med tech or a pathology resident, this book has all the information you will need and use. However, for just a lab tech, you will either be fast asleep, highly discouraged, or your head will be spinning from all the information. The text itself is highly complex with no delineation between information for the different levels of health care workers. Also, the binding is terrible. Half our class's books have fallen apart. The publisher did send new ones, but one spine split immediately. So the quality of the book binding is quite poor, but you wouldn't know that from the price!!! In closing, this book is incredibly useful as a reference and will aid you in your studies, but it is definitely NOT for the faint of heart (academically, I mean). This is not a 'hematology for dummies' book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes difficult to understand, and the binding falls apart, February 5, 2008
This book is okay for a student that is going to be guided through it step by step, but to use as a reference text I think their are probably better books out there. Harmening can get a little confusing on this topic at times, though I have heard that the 5th edition is a bit better. Also, the binding fell apart. I wrote the publisher and they said they would replace the book but only if i sent my old one in. I didn't want to loose all my notes/highliting so I am just going to deal with having the book fall apart.

I paid for the expedited shipping 2 - 6 days, but it took way more than that, and I didn't get it in time for when I needed it.
