Book Description

January 15, 1999
Until now, those in need of information on infectious diseases had to choose between encyclopedic reference texts or the infectious diseases sections in standard textbooks in internal medicine. Now there is a better alternative-Clinical Infectious Diseases fills the long-standing need for a practical yet comprehensive work that offers easy, convenient access to the topic. Of interest to internists, infectious disease specialists, and residents in training, the book is structured to give the reader essential information about the etiology and pathogenesis of various infectious diseases, and focuses on the clinical issues of managing, diagnosing, and treating patients with all types of infection. The editors and contributors are internationally known and recognized experts, and aim to validate the increasingly universal approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of infections worldwide. Emphasizing the clinical presentation of the patient by organ-system, diagnostic considerations including geographic, anatomic and microbiologic concerns, are addressed in detail. Diagnostic algorithms are provided, and specific choices of antimicrobial therapy are discussed and compiled in a user-friendly tabular format. Preventive measures for different types of infections are also addressed. Sections devoted to infections in special patient/risk groups, such as the post operative patient, the patient with immunodeficiency, the trauma patient, and the burn patient are included, as well as coverage of infections of travelers to tropical countries, and patients who have been bitten or scratched by animals or insects. A detailed presentation on HIV infection includes discussions of epidemiology, pathogenesis, immunology, clinical manifestations and antiviral treatment, as well as management of opportunistic infections.

Editorial Reviews

Review

" ... editors and their contributors have succeeded in covering several crucial areas in clinical infectious diseases ... amazing ability to condense important and up-to-date information in a way that is succinct, readable and worthwhile ... have succeeded in producing a book that makes fascinating reading, with a wealth of easily digestible information ... fills a very important gap in the market for both laboratory workers and clinicians. It is an easy and excellent reference guide for infectious diseases and tempting to dip into over and over again." Clinical and Investigative Medicine (Oct 1999)

"The editors and contributors have succeeded in producing a book that makes fascinating reading, with a wealth of easily digestable information....It is an easy and excellent reference guide for infectious diseases and tempting to dip into over and over again."--Clinical and Investigative Medicine

"This new text presents updated and valuable information to the clinician and brings to the forefront issues important for diagnosing and managing infectious diseases in an era of competing demands on resources and rapidly evolving health-care delivery systems....The editors and contributors to this book have successfully presented the diagnosis, management, and prevention of infectious diseases in a context that promotes the best of patient care and outcome."--Emerging Infectious Diseases

mentioned in Annals of Internal Medicine

"The editors have put together an array of well-known physician authors from the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia. This eclectic approach to authorship is a definite strength of the book. In addition, the editors themselves are either specialists or generalists, which serves to remove bias and create a balance to the material." -- Jeffrey T. Kirchner, American Family Physician, Jan 15, 2001, Vol 63, No. 2

" ... an excellent clinical reference book that is highly recommended ... this book is a useful and needed reference textbook and is recommended for the noninfectious disease specialist medical or paediatric practitioner." Canadian Journal of Infectious Diseases (April 2000)

" ... comprehensive textbook ... well organized, logical and easy to follow. " Canadian Journal of Public Health (Feb 2000)
