Book Description

1585620513 978-1585620517 January 2002 1st
In this new edition, completely updated for DSM-IV-TR, the authors transform their professional experience into clear, concise, practical, and learnable skills. They teach how to master each of the four basic interview components separately, and how to make them interact optimally during the five phases of the patient interview. Also included is an example of a write-up of a psychiatric evaluation that will satisfy most third-party payers, taking the reader through the write-up step by step and showing how it can be adapted to virtually any procedural or research need. Changes to this edition: -Addition of discussion of violence and duty to warn -Expansion of attention problems, suicide intent, and comorbidities of personality disorders -Addition of formal assessments of executive functions and of dementia (in appendix) As with the previous edition, The Clinical Interview Using DSM-IV-TR presents a unique vision of how to use the most powerful assessment strategies developed in the field of clinical psychology and psychiatry.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Here the unimaginative shackles of orthodox psychiatric history taking and mental state examination are thrown off with the proposal that the diagnostic process starts from the initial contact with the patient. This of course, is obvious to the experienced practitioner but is rarely conveyed in textbooks on psychiatric interviewing, which tend to convey a systematic, rather pedestrian approach, where mental state examination and diagnosis linearly follow data collection. In contrast, the authors' approach is a thinking approach, where mental state examination weaves through-out the interview informing, shaping, and refining the diagnostic process.... This is a textbook that should be read by all mental health professionals, whatever their core discipline. The reader would benefit from reading both volumes in their entirety (over 1,000 pages) but could profit simply from dipping in and rereading relevant chapters.... The reader is introduced to a gourmet menu of interviewing techniques, described in detail and illustrated by deconstructed interviews."- "Lisetta M. Lovett, Contemporary Psychology APA Review of Books," "2004"

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Othmer is a remarkable teacher, October 26, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Clinical Interview Using DSM-IV-TR, Vol. 1: Fundamentals (Paperback)
This book (and its companion "The Difficult Patient") are highly readable and very rewarding. As a practicing psychiatrist using it to prepare for the oral boards, I can tell you that I learned many things -- both practical tips and theoretical insights. I had originally thought these two books were "filler" by the APP to capitalize on the release of DSM-IV, but boy was I wrong! It is an absolute winner in its own right, regardless of the publisher. Thank you, Drs. Othmer, for these magnificent contributions to education in the field of psychiatry.

5.0 out of 5 stars How To Do Your Best Clinical Interview, June 22, 2009
This review is from: The Clinical Interview Using DSM-IV-TR, Vol. 1: Fundamentals (Paperback)
As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist, I have found this book to be an essential part of my practice especially during the evaluation process.

The book is based on the framework of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR Fourth Edition (Text Revision) and is a wonderful tool to assist the evaluator in assessing patients. It has information on developing rapport, strategies for getting information, ways to assess mental status, how to make a diagnosis and disorder-specific interviewing techniques.

Any mental health provider who is responsible for assessment and evaluation of patients would benefit by becoming familiar with the techniques and information in this book. You will find it invaluable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Did Not Deliver, December 8, 2010

I was expecting more about the content on the DSM-IV and a step-by-step process of asking the patient questions based on how the interview is going. What kind of language or behaviors should a psychiatrist look for? If anyone could recommend a book like this, please let me know.
