Interviewing textbooks are notoriously dry and mechanical. I can count using the fingers of one hand the number of books I have read on the subject that are worth their weight in cotton candy.

This work by the Sommers-Flanagan duo represents an excellent addition to the instructional literature on the fine art of interviewing. They use an wonderful blend of humor, humanity, sound advice and counsel, and theory.

Highly recommended.

It is rare to find a text book that is not a chore to read, but this is one of them! The authors write in a very engaging manner, and the frequent bursts of humor make reading it a real pleasure. It takes readers through all the steps of interviewing, at a perfect pace, so that readers are not overwhelmed with information, but are able to absorb it, and develop their skills gradually. It also discusses in depth how to work with particular populations, including young clients, culturally diverse clients, and couples. The skills and techniques are discussed in a way that is is easy for readers to grasp and apply to their work. I would highly recommend this book for all students in the helping professions field. It is the most useful book I read during graduate school and I will always refer back to it throughout my career.

This book is one of the best I have read during graduate school. It has been deeply relevant to my experiences as a counselor so far, and having a copy on my bookshelf gives me a sense of security surrounding the difficult situations I have yet to face in my career. It is also engaging to read, thoughtfully written, and artfully organized. John and Rita Sommers-Flanagan are skilled writers and have a unique ability to deliver complex content in a way that is easy for readers to absorb and apply to practice. Reading this book has been an essential component of my education as a counselor,as well as an enjoyable experience, and I will continue to refer back to it throughout my career.

Great book with practical advice. Takes you step-by-step through the initial interview process, and tries to account for potential difficulties encountered along the way. Highly recommended.

This book is great for the starters in the field of counseling. It provides valuable information for counselors that are practical to implement.

Many books which address therapy are either to abstract or mechanical. John Sommers-Flanagan writes in a way that allows the reader to grasp on to the abstract concepts while presenting useful techniques. The book is highly engaging and the chapter on suicide interventions has been a great aid in maintain the safety of clients.

Book is a great deal of help for the class I am taking and should help tremendously for future psychology classes.

This book so far is easy to read and follow. It's not dry like other books I've read

It's an excellent textbook for those taking a course on clinical interviewing. It's a well written textbook that will help any psychologists or counselor understand step by step all you need to know concerning on the basic skills in involved in clinical interviewing.
