Editorial Reviews

Review

From the reviews:

"This introductory book is designed to take readers from the fundamentals of proton interactions to the interpretation of clinical MR imaging studies. … All healthcare professionals are the intended audience. The book is certainly suitable for radiologists interested in MRI or MR technologists wanting to learn the essentials of the technique. … provides a good starting point for those involved in MR imaging with a clinical perspective. It is well-illustrated and practically demonstrates how physical principles directly govern the images of any MR imaging study." (R. Terry Thompson, Doody’s Review Service, March, 2009)

Product Description

This book is a complete introduction to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and is addressed to a wide audience. It is composed of two complementary parts, dealing with the physics and the clinical aspects of MRI.The theoretical background of MRI is presented in a clear, direct and succinct manner. Material not vital to routine clinical work is omitted or skimmed over. The second part is a novel approach to clinical MRI that stimulates the reader's thinking. The emphasis is on the mental steps that lead clinicians to a complete and meaningful diagnosis.

This author is to be commended on selecting a novel treatment of a dreaded subject, but not on the results. This relatively new textbook starts with a promise to cover only the bare essentials of the physical principles of MRI, but in doing so, cuts each topic so short that they are nearly useless except as a review for someone who has already learned most of MRI physics. The second half of the book consists of numerous images showing comparative effects of different pulse sequences, which are intended to illustrate diagnostic techniques. Again, a lack of a clear theoretical framework and thorough discussions of the images risks confusing many students. If you buy this book for self study, make sure you also have a more complete text (like Westbrook or McRobbie) available to fill in the blanks. On the other hand, because of the many unique images, this text would make a useful addition to a standard second level MRI physics course for technologists.
