Review

REVIEW OF PREVIOUS EDITION:
"This is an excellent, comprehensive textbook that should be in the library of every practicing psychiatrist. Thorough review of this book is more than adequate preparation for the neurology segments of the general psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry examinations. Practicing psychiatrists will find this book extremely useful to have available when they need to look up a neurology complaint or differential diagnosis or simply want to remind themselves of some aspect of the neurological examination or the presentation and management of common neurological diseases. "- The American Journal of Psychiatry

I am a psychiatry resident and this book was recommended to me by my program director, (a neuropsychiatrist). Buying this book was one of the best decisions I made. Its great. Extremely readable, with good pictures. Clear, concise with great questions at the end of the chapters and at the end of the book. I highly recommend this for anyone training in psych who needs to review their neurology.

I am a neuropsychologist (and Assistant Professor of Neurology at a major university) studying for board certification. This book was recommended study material. I found the basic neurology review quite helpful, but the discussion of individual diseases/conditions were mixed. It seems as if Kaufman has overstepped his areas of expertise. The lit review for many areas was sparse and he presents things as solid facts when, in fact, the empirical literature is quite mixed (and not having citations in the text makes it all but impossible to do fact checking). Other information is just plain wrong. The material in this volume is too wide to have been written by a single author. Kaufman would have been better off serving as an editor, having experts in a given area write the respective chapters.

I HIGHLY recommend this book. It will solidify and clarify your knowledge of Neurology. If your are about to take your Board in Psychiatry you should buy this book. I also recommend this book to residents in neurology or psychiatry.

Trained in psychoanalysis, I was ill-prepared for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. This book told me what I had to know not only to pass the Board (with a very high grade), but a deeper appreciation of the interface of neurology and psychiatry. The book has wonderful illustrations and great questions-and-answers. Also, the text is easy to read and, more important, recall.

This is an excellent review book. It is well organized and is a complete review of all neurology needed for the Psychiatry Board Exams. It prepared me for the exams thoroughly. Excellent questions and answers at the end of each chapter. I highly recommend this textbook.

Quite heavy reading for a review book. Very intuitive writing with good illustrations. Not a quick review but certainly solid learning tool. Some psychiatric elborations are over stretched. Overall, recommended if you are relatively weak in neurology. Quite expensive though :-)

I have read the most rated review on this item, where a "leading neuropsychology researcher" tells you what the flaws of this book are. I have a different perspective. Being a psychiatry trainee, I don't need to know about cutting edge research in the field of neurology. When I wanted a book, my idea was to get my hands on something which teaches me basic-neurology in a basic-manner, without any bells, whistles or fans etc.
I have absolutely loved this book. The user interface is great, and just like some other text books which I have liked (see my other reviews if need be) I think this book is very palatable, and easy to read. If your idea is not to become a leading neurologist, as I would assume is; if you are exploring this book as an option. And you are a "regular psychiatrist" trying to get a grip on neurology: I would say this is the book. No regrets. It has really helped me a lot both for knowing neurology and preparing for the boards.
