About the Author

Melanie Duffy, MSN, RN, CCRN, CCNS, is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Critical Care at Pinnacle Health System, Harrisburg, PA and Adjunct Faculty at Widener University, Chester, PA. She is President-Elect and Board Member of NACNS. She is a member of other professional organizations including the Am Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and Sigma Theta Tau. Her professional influence has been in promoting the role, practice and leadership aspects of the Clinical Nurse Specialist. She has been an active Presenter at national, state and local meetings and has provided testimony to the PA Professional Licensure Committee ( 2004 - 2008) on Title Recognition for the CNS. She is ACLS, CCRN and CCNS certified.

Susan Dresser, MSN, APRN-BC CCRN, has been a Cardiovascular Clinical Nurse Specialist since 1989 when she received her MSN in Adult Critical Care from Duke University. She currently practices at Deaconess Hospital, Oklahoma City, OK and is an Adjunct Instructor at the Univ of Oklahoma College of Nursing. She obtained prescriptive authority, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) licensure and recognition as a Medicare Provider in 1998. In addition, Ms Dresser is a member of the ANA, Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society for Nurses. She has served on the NACNS Board of Directors for three years and is the current Secretary. Her professional presentations have focused on Evidence Based Practice, Acute Coronary Syndromes, and Congestive Heart Failure.

Janet S. Fulton, PhD, CNS, is an Associate Professor @ Indiana University School of Nursing Dept of Adult Health where she has taught since 2002. Jan has been teaching CNS nursing since 1981 at a variety of schools of nursing, including Wright State Univ, Xavier Univ., and The Univ of Cincinnati. Jan currently is Editor-in-Chief of LWW's Clinical Nurse Specialist: The Journal of Advanced Nursing Practice and Ex-Officio Board Member of the Nat. Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) where she served as president (2002) and treasurer (2000-01). Dr. Fulton also holds memberships in the Oncology Nursing Society where she is Coordinator of the CNS Special Interest Group, and the ANA where she is a member of its' Council of CNS Exec Committee. She is certified to practice as a CNS in Ohio and is certified as an Adult Health CNS by the ANCC.
