I agree with other reviewers of this ancillary text. It's too incomplete even to function as a quick study guide. Major topics are glossed over and vital areas are missed entirely. This review is from: Clinical Physiology Made Ridiculously Simple (Paperback)
I'm a first year Med student and have found this book to be a valuable resource. The explanations are perfect for gaining a broad understanding of often difficult subjects before diving into the textbooks and journals.

The chapters about fluid/electrolyte balance and immunology are incredible, clarifying concepts that I had struggled through previously. In addition, clinical correlations augment the discussion of normal physiology, keeping things real for those us getting early clinical exposure on the wards. The author implements useful drawings and flowcharts that further simplify complex material. For example, the immunology "cartoon" flowchart is perfect for understanding the central role of CD4 cells in binding to an MHC2, and depicting the numerous downstream events of adaptive immunity. In takes about an hour or two to plow through a chapter (and actually understand everything), but in the end, you have a great foundation that can be enhanced through lectures or PBL depending on your program.

Regarding the negative reviews below, what do these people expect from such a thin book? The author even admits in his preface that it should be used in conjunction with a text. I don't feel this book is intended for USMLE preparation or as a "study guide" for a medical school exam. These reviewers would be better served with a large spoon, a copy of Guyton, and a bib.

Clinical Phys made ridiculously simple dumbs down complex subjects and gives you a big picture understanding of how things work- this is the first book I've come across that makes learning physiology simple and efficient. In addition, I've found the Radiology, Anatomy and Microbiology books in this series to be particularly useful so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent resource, January 14, 2003

This review is from: Clinical Physiology Made Ridiculously Simple (Paperback)
As with other books by Dr. Goldberg, this one is nothing short of miraculous! Through a systems-based approach, an otherwise complicated and tedious subject is transformed into an accesible and enjoyable voyage. Quite honestly, you should leave your standard thick physiology texts in the corner to use for curls or bench pressing... this book ABSOLUTELY encompasses the key knowledge of physiology in a fraction of the time. It seems like a gimmick, but it isn't. Having graduated from med school a few years ago, I can still say with authority that this book will serve you well into the future, not to mention on your next test, which will undoubtedly include mostly clinically oriented questions which, in turn, can ALL be answered after a careful and thoughtful review of this book. Don't waste any more time... read this one first! --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but very basic, overview of physiology., March 17, 2009
This review is from: Clinical Physiology Made Ridiculously Simple (Paperback)
I am a medical student and found this review book to be a nice supplement to other physiology review texts. However, it is not as complete as the Clinical Microbiology made ridiculously simple from the same series.

There are significant gaps in information that would be necessary to know for Step One. However, if you are a person that needs a conversational style of review to get the story behind physiology, this is an excellent starting point. One really nice feature is that it has a nice thorough review of neurophysiology. This was an unexpected, but welcome surprise!

Happy studying!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good place to start for boards review, November 30, 2007
This review is from: Clinical Physiology Made Ridiculously Simple (Paperback)
This is a good first source in beginning your Step 1 review. It'll jog your memory before you dive into other review books. It also has very helpful ways of explaining physiology concepts (except for the pulmonary chapter) which you may have had trouble understanding before. This book has less of the helpful pictures compared to their Microbiology MRS book, but the text is still very good and easy to understand. If you have trouble with physio, try this book!

1.0 out of 5 stars BUY the 1st edition for $6 this edition is word for word the same as 1st edition, February 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I give 2nd Edition of this book -1 star what a rip off I own the 1st edition of the same text and give that one a 4star is not a very comprehensive physiology text but if you want a quick review of the physio is good and it can be read in 1-2 days as refresher.

But I have compared the 1st edition and 2nd edition and is the same book word for word only difference is new edition has 146 pages and old one has 147 pages, and this is because they have made the size of some of the images smaller this way more text fit in the page.

DO NOT SPEND $19 get used 1st edition for $6 dollars.

I almost forgot another difference is as you can see 2nd has a yellow cover still not worth $13 for yellow paint.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview, but remains cursory, December 24, 2010
This is a good overview of physiology, but it lacks detail in various places. For instance, I didn't find any mention of the Frank-Starling law, and no pressure-volume loops. However, what it does explain, it does so accurately and thoroughly. The clinical discussions at the end of chapters are good. One probably should not rely on this as a stand alone text, but use it to clarify or re-think certain concepts or systems. Non-essential part of a library, but helpful nonetheless.

I'm getting ready to begin studying anesthesia (nurse anesthetist) and I find this book to be a great review for basic physiology principals. "Light reading," I suppose, to help refresh my memory. It is an easy read with good pictures and diagrams to help you retain the subject material. However, it is in no way comprehensive enough, nor does it have the depth, to be used as a first line reference for residents, fellows, or nurse anesthesia students.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it., January 19, 2011

This review is from: Clinical Physiology Made Ridiculously Simple (Paperback)
While I was in my A&P class, I thought this book would help with additional study. Not so much. The book is scattered around, and with what I was learning in class compared to the book, there was no match what so ever to study from.

My advice. Stick with your text anatomy book and pay attention in class. This in no way helped me study or learn more.

I give it two stars because the info is correct, but was not helpful for my intended purpose. Nor did I find it any 'simpler' than plain ol' paying attention in class.

this book explains many areas i struggled w/ in a different way. before purchasing this book, i found myself getting lost in the details w/ other texts. this book tackles difficult topics & is highly focused on info that is clinically relevant. it's truly a different approach & painlessly short ;) i wish someone would have recommended it sooner.
also- for anyone taking neuro, i highly recommend clinical neuroanatomy by the same author (i am reading that prior to taking the course & feel almost ready/prepared for the challenge- rather than slightly terrified!!)
