3.0 out of 5 stars Unnecessarily Wordy - Not For Use as a Practical Guide, February 24, 2007

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Clinical Textbook for Veterinary Technicians Sixth Edition (Hardcover)
I recently started working in a veterinarian office to get clinical hours for my veterinary school application. I bought this book based on the Amazon reviews so that I could study and look a bit less clueless around the hospital :) The first chapter I read was on animal restraint, and it was very frustrating. I feel like the text was bloated to make some sort of length requirement because the chapter's sections go on and on with very little meat to it. (Do we really need it spelled out several times in excruciating detail why it's bad if an animal escapes or bites someone?) You'll get almost the same value from just reading the one sentence highlighted summaries sprinkled through the text as you do from reading the whole thing. Based off the many more positive reviews here, I guess the book may be more appropriate as a textbook, and less so for a practical guide for learning procedures you'll be expected to perform in a clinical setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible, September 19, 2005
This review is from: Clinical Textbook for Veterinary Technicians Sixth Edition (Hardcover)
There is a reason that this book is referred to as "The Bible" at our clinic. It is extremely informative for any assistant or technician. It covers everything top to bottom and is a great resource to keep on your shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! However..., January 12, 2006
This review is from: Clinical Textbook for Veterinary Technicians Sixth Edition (Hardcover)
I am a first year VT student who finds this book INVALUABLE. As others have noted, this is a well-rounded, knowledgeable text. However, as a reptile owner, I was dismayed to note that, on p. 486, suggested protein sources for juvenile iguanas include "dog food, monkey biscuits, and tofu." In a word, NO! This was the thinking perhaps a decade ago, but continued research by respected herpetoculturists has proven that the best diet for a juvenile iguana is TOTALLY herbivorous. (See www.anapsid.org for details) This is merely one sentence in an otherwise exceptional book, but I find it somewhat irresponsible. Exotics owners already deal w/ a plethora of misinformation, why proliferate such outdated ideas in such a trusted text? Yes, I plan to concentrate eventually on reptile medicine...:)
