40 contributors from around the world, each an expert in his or her field and each of whom is in daily contact with patients suffering from tropical dermatological problems have written for this book. The text, which covers the aetiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of the whole range of tropical dermatological conditions, is complemented by current references and well illustrated with black and white and colour photographs. The book is in ten sections, most of which are organized by pathogen. The first section covers fungus infections which are extremely common in tropical dermatology. Subsequently viral dermatoses, treponematoses and bacterial dermatoses are covered, the latter includes leprosy. Bacterial disorders are characterized by pustules rather than rashes. The following sections cover dermatoses due to animals and malnutrition, eczema and dermatitis, sexually transmitted diseases (including AIDS). The remainder of the book is given over to major problems and special situations such as tumours, disorders of pigmentation, the eye, aquatic dermatoses and topographical differential diagnosis.
