Editorial Reviews

Review

"Mind Over Mood and its companion piece...promise to be classics. No managed care report leaves my desk without a direct reference in the treatment plan to this outstanding set of manuals." --Bruce Webster, Ph.D. in The Orange County Psychologist

"Using the Clinician's Guide to Mind Over Mood with the client manual offers a winning combination. The manual is filled with helpful exercises and strategies for clients; the Clinician's Guide will assist the therapist in making the best use of the manual. If you are looking for ways to maximize client improvement and for a variety of beneficial homework tasks to use with your patients, this is it." --Simon H. Budman, Ph.D., Harvard Community Health Plan & Innovative Training Systems, Inc.

"The authors' Mind Over Mood was an excellent guide for clients. The Clinician's Guide to Mind Over Mood is truly an outstanding cognitive therapy resource for clinicians. The Clinician's Guide can help clinicians apply cognitive therapy to a wide array of problems and includes easy-to-follow guidelines." --John W. Santrock, Ph.D., Univ of Texas at Dallas

"In Mind Over Mood, Greenberger and Padesky produced an absolutely first-rate guide for patients who wanted to learn about cognitive therapy and how to use it to deal with their problems. In Clinician's Guide to Mind Over Mood, the authors have provided an invaluable guide for the clinician to accompany their patient workbook. The guide is clear, concise, and filled with clinical wisdom. It should prove to be a valuable resource for anyone who wants to work with other people and reflects the kind of creativity that keeps cognitive therapy vital and fresh as it matures as a discipline." --Steve Hollon, Ph.D., Vanderbilt University

Format: Paperback
What makes this book so useful is that it assists the therapist in effectively guiding the client as s/he follows the workbook in dealing with his/her mood disorder. It shows how best to employ the workbook in therapy, help the client set goals, and individualize the exercises. It demonstrates its application not only to individuals but also to groups, brief therapy, and inpatient settings. Under each situational category, it provides a session by session description of the book's integration with therapy. What many therapists may find a boon are sample client-therapist dialogues, tips on engaging clients and maintaining collaboration, troubleshooting guides, and assignment reminders. Because of its flexibility, this cognitive program can be tailored to a range of diagnoses.

The Clinician's Guide is a useful companion to the Mind Over Mood workbook. The guide is especially helpful for graduate students and relatively new clinicians, if you are an experienced CBT clinician, this book is not essential, however, like most works there is good information to be gleaned here. Bottom line, the guide is helpful but not essential, simply going through the workbook yourself should provide you with enough practical experience to use the workbook effectively.

I read quite a few books on CBT. Most of the other books went in to too much detail about the history and science behind CBT and the scientific eveidence that supports it's value. If you are a person already convinced of the value of CBT this is the perfect book. It goes in to real life scenarios and walks you through each step of how to practice CBT in your daily life without any non sense. I use CBT most days in an iPhone app that perfectly reinforces all the lessons you will learn in this book, it is called MoodKit.

If I read the title "closer" I wouldn't have bought it, it comes from the perspective of being a clinician instead of being the patient or person who "needs the insight" Although I will read it, as it MAY just surprise me and by telling me stories of each patients situation, I may be able to relate and therefore it could help me more than I am thinking it will right now.........
I have only just started reading the book and so far it is interesting and educational. The ONLY reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I am not a clinician, but like I stated above, IT MAY JUST SURPRISE ME TO READ IT FROM THE CLINICIAN'S SIDE VERSUS BEING THE PATIENT. I am hoping that by explaining each of chapters, it will help me better to understand why and what I can do when I get in high anxiety modes

First of all, I want to commend the authors on the structure of this book. All too often clinical texts are dry, stale and difficult to take in at a glance. Not so with this manual. It has a very easy structure that lets you simply take in each page at a glance and intuitively understand the gist of the information. Another thing I like about this text is that it also involves the clinician in taking these methods and working on themselves. The steps are simple and straight to the point. Additionally, it provides information on how to make therapy successful and how to deal with difficult patients in a kind and compassionate manner. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in working with modern therapy technologies of CBT.

Had to purchase this book for a class. It is terrible and never should have been a required reading. Every other phrase is "use/read/assign Mind Over Mood"... Your client has no interest in using a book throughout the therapy process? Use Mind Over Mood! Your client doesn't want to use Mind Over Mood? Have them read and do the worksheets in Mind Over Mood!
It is entirely non-useful for anything but a poorly disguised advertisement for the client version of Mind Over Mood.
BTW, if you found this review to be irritatingly repetitive, don't buy the book. It's more of the same.
