About the Author

Clint the Black Cat’s author (and owner) is Carla Christina Contreras, a California native, who has enjoyed a professional career as an actress, singer, writer, and graphic artist. She began her screen acting career on the legendary TV show, The Waltons, and has appeared in numerous commercials and features. An NBC-TV movie-of-the-week, Following Her Heart, shot in Nashville, starring Ann-Margret, gave Carla one of her biggest co-starring film roles to date.

Before writing Clint the Black Cat™, Carla had always lent her skills and talent to community activities from California to Tennessee. After moving to Nashville from Hollywood in 1992, and after being adopted by Clint the Black Cat™, Carla was bitten by the volunteer spirit in Tennessee. One of her projects was with the Nashville Metro School District Pencil Pal Foundation, where she found out about the absence of funding for the arts.

"I was shocked to find out that the art education program was funded on a shoestring - - and a broken one at that," she recalls.

Carla volunteered her talents at Pennington Elementary School. She decided that the best way to involve the Kindergarten thru 4th grade students she was working with was to have them help her with her book idea based on her own true life pet, Clint the Black Cat™. They would contribute drawings for her book, and the school would receive proceeds from the sale of the book to go toward funding the creative arts program at Pennington. "This was one of those ideas that woke me up in the middle of the night," says Carla. "I pitched the idea to Mrs. Evans, the principal, and Mrs. Johnson, the art teacher who was being funded by the PTA’s shoestring budget." Mrs. Evans & Mrs. Johnson decided to include Clint the Black Cat™ in their art class curriculum.

Carla’s own cat, Clint (a black cat), became the locomotive for the entire book series project. "So for the next book, I’m planning to go to another school where they need money for the arts," she says.

Carla received support from every newspaper, business journal, talk-radio show, and TV station in Nashville for her efforts to help the Metro arts program through Clint the Black Cat™. "It was amazing, everybody wanted to cover our story, they said it was the kind of human interest story that doesn’t come along every day."

Carla’s marketing skills are evident in everything she has done in her career. She is a natural on camera, radio, and in print. Her sense of humor, like the message found in Clint the Black Cat™, is entirely accessible.

Carla’s love of writing includes songs, an upcoming greeting card line, as well as cowboy poetry. "I’ve been working with a couple of cowboy poets, and I really love reading my stuff at local poetry slams - especially my character Ruby, who runs a saloon in a honky-tonk mining town in the Old West." Carla adds, "the greeting card line is called "The Truth & Honesty Collection™- When you have nothing nice to say, but you say it anyway," but that’s for later...."

A thorough professional, Carla has earned many awards and certificates for her work as a graphic designer. She currently manages a team of graphic and web designers at Northern Telecom’s US headquarters in Nashville.

5.0 out of 5 stars The next Eloise!!!!, May 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Clint the Black Cat (Hardcover)
Clint is a classic book that I recommend for children of all ages. It is a terrific gift giving idea that makes a beautiful presentation. My favorite parts of the Clint book are the illustrations that the children drew. My little friends think that is fabulous. Clint also offers an interactive page that allow your child to draw his version of Clint. It is a definite 5 Star book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for all ages, January 31, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Clint the Black Cat (Hardcover)
This is a book that is fun for everyone, not just children. The book is cleverly written as a poem. As a cat lover with no children, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I also enjoyed the illustrations that were created by the children. Being able to see life expressed through the eyes (and crayons) of children is a special treat. And, although I don't have any children of my own, I try to always hold onto that childlike fascination of life. Books like "Clint the Black Cat" help me do that.

I also appreciate that the author is willing to donate book profits toward benefiting education. At a time when the entire education program is in so much need of funding, it is a relief to find someone who is willing to donate their creativity, time and money towards helping education. Considering that the arts programs are the first to be dropped when funding is tight, it is an area that is especially in need of funding.

I recommend this book for you, for every child you know, for every cat-lover you know, and for every teacher you know. And in giving this gift, you will be gifting the entire education program.

5.0 out of 5 stars EVERYONE will Love Clint the Black Cat!!, December 13, 2000
This review is from: Clint the Black Cat (Hardcover)
Children, parents, teachers, and artists alike will all love Clint the Black Cat! CHILDREN: Because Clint speaks at their level and the big, bright illustrations of Clin't adventures were drawn by other kids just like them! Clint is an inspiration to the artist who lives in every child! PARENTS: Because this kitty is honest and clever and fun to read about with their children - the text reads like a fun poem. TEACHERS: Because this story was ultimately conceived with their jobs in mind! It's hard to teach in public schools with limited budgets - this book stands out as a testimony to the need for improved funding in our schools. ARTISTS: Because this book addresses the importance of art in our communities - for children and grown-ups alike! Art starts early... let's encourage our children to express themselves through the arts! CONCLUSION: How couldn't YOU love it too?
