Harry, Josey and William Munny...Lots of Bang For Your Buck!,

This review is from: Clint Eastwood Selection: Dirty Harry/The Outlaw Josey Wales/Unforgiven (DVD)
Warner Bros. has put together a number of these Eastwood multi-packs. Some are put together by theme(adventurer, cop, westerns, etc). This one doesn't have a theme but if I were to give it one I'd call it "The Best of Clint". Not only does this trio of treats for the Eastwood fan have three greats that really define him, but the price for the pack is outstanding as well. All three look and sound great on the DVDs as well.
"Dirty Harry" ... In 1971 Clint Eastwood made a big move and switched genres from Westerns to make this unique cop story. And what a story! "Dirty Harry" soon became a household name along with all the famous lines that came from this first in the series. "Do you feel lucky? Well do ya Punk?" "This is a .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world. It'll blow your head clean off."I Love that stuff,(can't ya just hear Clint saying that), and the taunting look he gives the recievers off these lines. Inspector Harry Callahan(Okay Dirty Harry buffs, what's his badge number? and what movie is on the marquee in the background as he shoots the bank robbers?), a loner, widowed due to a drunk driver, has no qualms about sidestepping the law to apprehend a criminal. He's frustrated and fed up with murderers and rapists getting away because of some pesky problem like reading Miranda Rights! He does it his way. Audiences cheered this at the time, and he became an icon for cop movies yet to come. Find out how he was bestowed the nickname "Dirty Harry", as he goes after a maniac with a vengance. There's lots of great action, stunts, and just plain great Clint. If you're a first time Harry viewer, I guarantee it won't be your last. If you already know you love this series you'll be thrilled with this DVD. This a a top notch transfer of this 1971 film. The picture quality and colors look great. I hardly noticed any signs of the age of this film. Badge#2211.......Play Misty For Me......Have Fun "The Outlaw Josey Wales"... Josey Wales is another of Clint's Eastwood's bigger than life Western characters that you won't soon forget.Josey though, is not like the others that preceeded him. It becomes apparent throughout this film, that this tough loner, on the run from murderers, has a heart the size of Texas.(And of course in this one we DO know his name!).Eastwood also does an artful job of directing this tale, that has everthing from action to romance, and even a little comedy. Ride with Josey(everyone else does) across the beautiful western vistas, as he takes on the "Red Legs" that are after him, saves a family from "Commancheros", makes friends with the Indians, and wears his heart on his sleeve as along the way he seems to attract a group of outcasts, including a dog, that he just can't leave behind. Clint surrounds himself with the most marvelous cast, including Sondra Locke, Bill McKinney, John Vernon and Chief Dan George who provides many of the lighter moments in this action packed western. The picture is gorgeous. All scenes including the darker and nighttime are sharp and clear. Colors are vibrant. The soundtrack is also wonderful. From the pounding hooves of the racing horses, to the rain, to the music and the dialouge, you won't miss a thing. What?! You haven't seen this yet??? It's a must for any Eastwood or Western fan! "Now, Spit!"..Chief Dan George...Enjoy "Unforgiven".... This may well be the greatest of Clint Eastwood's works. I am a big fan of both his work in front of the camera as well as his work as a director and producer, and this is my personal favorite. As well as the many international awards bestowed on this film and Eastwood as the director and star, it recieved four Academy Awards including Best Picture(1992) and Best Director. Warner Bros has bedazzled us with this outstanding transfer in every way of this fine film. The story revolves around a group of prostitues living in the little western town of Big Whiskey. They are appalled that the town Sherriff does little in the way of punishing a customer that has cut up the face of one of the girls. They put up their own reward to any man who kills the offender(and his partner). Word of the crime(albeit exaggerated)and the reward spreads through the west and brings to town an array of killers. The tension grows throught the film as the Sherriff and his men brutalize these predators. William Munny(Clint Eastwood),is an ex alcoholic notorious killer, now an unprofitable pig farmer, trying to raise his motherless children. Older and with less vengance flowing through his veins, now straps back on a gun and is going for the money. We watch him shed the pig farmer image and return to the vengeful killer. Gene Hackman, the late-great Richard Harris, Francis Fisher, and Morgan Freeman add their wonderful talents to this tale of sinners. As I mentioned above the DVD has been given an outstanding treatment. Both the picture, and the sound are perfect in every way. The cinematography breathtaking across the western vistas as they ride. The indoor and nighttime scenes may seem dark, but everyting distinguishable and it is meant to be this way. The storm with it's thunder and rain, the horses, and gunshots, the dialouge all crisp an clear. If you love this film you'll love the DVD. Another must see! "We all got it comin"..Munny to the Scofield Kid.... Saddle Up with Clint A great gift for the Eastwood fan! Lots of Bang for your buck! Go Ahead and Make Your Day....Laurie also recommended: The Gauntlet/True Crime The Greatest Western Themes Mannaja - A Man Called Blade

Blockbuster Eastwood triple-play,

This review is from: Clint Eastwood Selection: Dirty Harry/The Outlaw Josey Wales/Unforgiven (DVD)
As my review's title suggests, these three DVDs contain some of Clint Eastwood's finest work, fittingly presented in pristine transfers.
UNFORGIVEN, Clint Eastwood's last western, is dedicated by him to the memories of Sergio Leone and Don Siegel. Eastwood collaborated with director Leone on his first three star-billed movies, A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (1964), FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE (1965) and THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY (1967). Siegel directed Clint in COOGAN'S BLUFF (1968), TWO MULES FOR SISTER SARA (1970) and DIRTY HARRY. "Harry," which was released in the U.S. two days before Xmas '71, was a monster hit that garnered a Best Picture AA nomination. (Director Siegel cameos here as a pedestrian walking past Harry's car when he and Chico return to police headquarters.) UNFORGIVEN was only the second western to win a Best Picture Oscar, the first being CIMARRON (1931). Although Eastwood names "Josey Wales" as his favorite movie, UNFORGIVEN is mine. It has perfect dialogue with dozens of memorable lines, spot-on timing, ideal settings and a great cast. This film is a classic in every sense, one of the greatest westerns ever made and a fitting farewell to the genre for one of its biggest stars. Clint directed both "Unforgiven" and "Josey Wales." His taking over these duties from Philip Kaufman on the latter resulted in a ban of any cast or crew member replacing an in-production film's director, an order that's known as the "Eastwood Rule." "Wales" was named a personal favorite by Johnny Cash, George Strait and Johnny Carson. Orson Welles ranked it among the great westerns of Howard Hawks and John Ford. Parenthetical numbers preceding titles are 1 to 10 imdb viewer poll ratings. (7.9) Dirty Harry (1971) - Clint Eastwood/Harry Guardino/Reni Santoni/John Vernon/Andy Robinson/John Mitchum (7.8) The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) - Clint Eastwood/Sondra Locke/Chief Dan George/Bill McKinney/John Vernon/Sam Bottoms/Sheb Wooley/Royal Dano (8.2) Unforgiven (1992) - Clint Eastwood/Gene Hackman/Morgan Freeman/Richard Harris/Jaimz Woolvett/Frances Fisher
