Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Baird's first novel, Crashcourse (1993), got rave reviews for leaping headlong into well-heeled cyberpunk territory and delivering a gripping story with unrelenting panache. Here, with slightly less enthralling results, Baird recalls the same cast, from perpetually wisecracking heroine Cassandra Blaine to her aesthetically inclined lover, Moke, and their diabolically mercenary brother-in-arms, Swordfish. Back as well are their almost surrealistic surroundings, in which the entertainment of choice is movies that are felt as well as seen and whose stars earn millions at the risk of being killed. When Cassandra's former costar, presumed brutally murdered in a previous movie, reappears in the flesh but with no recognition of her and Moke, the team reunites to investigate a trail of corrupt producers and underground radical surgery. As in Crashcourse, the action is explosive. Baird's occasionally frenetic shorthand prose unfortunately makes the first novel required reading for full appreciation of the second, but no one can fault her ingenious originality. First-rate entertainment. Carl Hays

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Subtle Romance, June 4, 2000
This review is from: Clipjoint (Paperback)
Crashcourse was a great cyberpunk novel, a bit disorienting with the menage a trois that persisted in the novel. Clipjoint (the second in the series) is, to me, a further exploration of the relationship between Swordfish (one of my all-time fave novel heros) and the protagonist, Cassandra, which started in Crashcourse. Although the writing didn't quite have the tight feel of Crashcourse, I enjoyed the story better because of the very understated subtle romance developing between these two characters. Highly recommend the read. The romance is reminiscent of Tannith Lee's Silver Metal Lover though of course being cyberpunk, is written in a very different tone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flames, May 15, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Clipjoint (Paperback)
I accidently read this one first, then got hooked and went back for Crashcourse. I tore through the pages like a hungry hound, hadn't read a good sci-fi book lately. Her lanquage was hard and adolescent but her ideas flowed fast and well. I liked the trio aspect and the hero was unexpected. There was a huge plot hole at the end but in view of the great meal this book was, I dealt with it. I am going for Psykosis next to see where things end up with Cass.

3.0 out of 5 stars back cover summary, January 13, 2006

Ray Francis "sci fi enjoyeur" (St. Joseph, MI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clipjoint (Paperback)
from the back cover of the September 1994 Ace paperback edition

Two years ago, Cass, Moke, and Dosh acted in a cyber-film to make enough money to get off-planet. The studio plugged them into an adventure script, one that left Dosh dead - and Cass and Moke fleeing for their lives.

But Cass and Moke have done well for themselves, and the horrors of their past are safely buried. Or are they? Someone's sent Cass a vidclip of the latest hit cyber-film - starring an actor who bears a striking resemblance to Dosh. Too striking. So Cassandra's coming back. For answers. And revenge.

And this time, she's writing the script...
