Editorial Reviews

Review

"Mathews's analysis of Burgess does full justice to the author's complexity, revealing mythical analogies, literary allusions, and theological subtleties not ordinarily found in so-called popular writers. Mathews considers Burgess one of the greatest living novelists, ranking with Mann, Joyce, Faulkner, and Beckett. He provides an extremely literate and perceptive analysis of the stylistic and ideological complexities of Burgess's world." -- R. E. Morsberger

From the Back Cover

Anthony Burgess, the professional pseudonym of John Anthony Burgess Wilson, is one of the best-known writers of postwar Britain. He achieved early recognition in the 1950s with his Malayan novels, but only gained widespread acclaim with the publication of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE in 1962, later made into a hit movie by Stanley Kubrick. The world of CLOCKWORK ORANGE is a nightmare future England where teenage gangs roam the streets after dark, raping and pillaging, where government ministers try to further their own careers by brainwashing criminals into giving up their lives of crime, making it physically impossible for them to even contemplate antisocial acts. A second dystopian novel, THE WANTING SEED, looks further ahead, with even grimmer results: homosexuality is encouraged, infanticide is approved, and couples may have onlty one child without incurring official wrath. Richard Mathews discusses all of Burgesss work, from his first novel, A VISION OF BATTLEMENTS, to his most recent work of fiction BEARDS ROMAN WOMEN, paying particular attention to the authors major novels of the 1960s, THE EVE OF ST. VENUS, M/F, ONE HAND CLAPPING, and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE.

This review is from: Clockwork Universe of Anthony Burgess(Pop Writers Today, Vol 19) (Paperback)
To understand Anthony Burgess, you have to take in consideration the whole totalitarianism of his conceptual views upon the art of writing and its relation to reality. Matthews once again allows us to further understand what Burgess is trying to portray. The literay movement of what Burgess was trying to portray is best defined by Matthews begining on page one and neverending.
