Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

David Brand's first-rate narration tops off Tapply's 14th Brady Coyne mystery (The Seventh Enemy, LJ 12/94). When Brady is approached by an old client whose son has killed a woman in a drunk-driving accident and needs a good criminal defense lawyer, Brady calls on his fishing partner, Paul Cizek, to defend the remorseless drunk driver. Cizek reluctantly accepts the commission and wins the case, but the victory takes its toll. He begins to avoid Brady, abandons his wife, and disappears, leaving Brady to investigate the situation. The search for his vanished friend coincides with his lover's relocation, and soon Brady finds himself compelled to seriously reexamine his life's options. An entertaining product; highly recommended.

From AudioFile

Attorney Brady Coyne investigates the disappearance of a dear friend. David Brand's narration combines an intellectual tone with sarcasm and humor, resulting in a complex, yet likable, personality. Brand adds a touch of machismo to Coyne's women, but, thanks to his love interest, is continuously challenged. His interpretation of Coyne's secretary and a female attorney is offensive, however, as he whines, whimpers, and moans throughout their dialogue. Brand is strongest as a middle-aged, divorced professional embroiled in the case of his life while suffering through a mid-life crisis and a strong case of indecision.
