5.0 out of 5 stars Close Combat 4 Review December 5, 2010
Edition:Jewel Case|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Close Combat 4: Battle of the Bulge is a challenging real time strategy game! It is based on WWII events of december 1944 to January 1945 in the Ardennes forests. Units of the German Wehrmacht advance on U.S. Army forces to drive on the port of Antwerp to split the Allied invasion and there fore force the Allies to sue for peace.

The game itself is very fluid. Units for each battle are pre-determined. Unlike Close Combat 3: Russian Front, where you can select the units for you company before each battle. CC4 gives you basic companies with unit types already assigned. The result of each battle (and supply points secured) therefore provides what will be given to each company for the next upcoming battles. For instance, if it is a Panzer unit, you will receive 5-8 tanks to begin a battle. If it is a rifle company, you may only receive one. As a result, you must manouvre to place your units types strategically on the campaign map.

The only other point that was missing from this game was a true "Ending". In the Grand Campaign, there is no Port of Antwerp for the Germans to secure. If you choose the German side, like in the real battle, you are destined to lose. Not to say that the game naturally favors the Americans. It is just there is no real point to where the Wehrmacht can attain ultimate victory. If you do choose the German campaign, secure ALL supply and victory points, the game continues without end.

That being said, the game is fun, fluid, and addictive. It provides true lines of sight, beautiful maps, and realistic equipment. Rifle, engineer, and bazooka units especially, take out tanks without fear or hesitation. Overall, CC4 is a stand out for a genre of this kind! I would defintely recommend it if you are a fan of the Close Combat series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent game. December 13, 2012

The game play itself is actually kind of slow once the individual scenario is more or less decided, You sometimes have to wait a long time to end the scenario, unless you retreat or make suicidal charges against enemy units.
Good game if you have a lot of time on your hands,I thought the pevious games in this series were better, although they are all somewhat dated.
