Whoa! Pricey!,

Yeah, I took one look at this and I say, "Yeah, right." Well, whatever. I'm buying this game from a friend for 20 bucks.I tried out the demo and I might say, this game is fun for those RTS gamers like me. The only problem is the AI for the vehicles. You tell one vehicle to move a couple of yards, he goes on a 3 day trek through the enemy lines to move there. Another bad thing is the weapon strength. A Tiger I should easily destroy a T-34 with one shot; but in this game it takes a couple, and the Tiger I's armor should be strong enough to handle a couple of shots from a Sherman too. But the infantry AI is outstanding. They really do act like real soldiers; sometimes they think the orders you give are outragous and they won't do it, they surrender if they are surronded, and they panic if they aren't near a commander. Loved this game to the end!

5 stars for fun. 3 stars for game overall.
I believe this is best of the Close Combat series, despite its flaws. Unlike the rest of the Close Combat series, CC3 follows you throughout the entire war. If you are good you can keep your units from Operation Barbarossa in '41 all the way to the fall of Berlin in '45(if they are lucky enough to survive). The more battles your men survive, the better they become at fighting. This feature makes you want to keep your men alive and cheer when they make it, and feel sorry when they meet their demise. What makes this game even better is the 'Real Red' mod(which you will have to search on the internet for and does not come with the retail version), which allows for more additional units (i.e. Panzer VI and VIe command tanks, Lend-Lease units such as Shermans, Valentines and Crocodiles) and winter camouflage (during winter of course).

Better than ten years old, this game offers a better wargaming experience than anything currently available. I've played CCIV and V as well and while I enjoyed them, they were not so much fun as CCIII. I'm sure that part of the reason I enjoy CCIII better is the RPG aspect in that you keep your troops....those who've survived........from the opening of Barbarossa to the final battle at the Reichstag. This version also offers a vast array of battlefields..........although all of them tend to emphesize tank combat.
I do have a few caveats to offer for those wishing to play them game some 10 years after it's release; 1) You will need to install a few patches..........actually one made by Atomic back in the day; cc30(I think). This patch addressed some tracking issues and adjusted weapons vrs. armor tables to achieve more realism. I will also recommend one of the "Real Red" patches as they add more in the way of units available, realism, and playability. There are other interresting "mods" which can be loaded into this game such as the 1940 mod and Grossdeutchland mod both created by a modder known to me only as "Dreaded 88". I don't play this game much now because my mouse is hypersensitive in the game even at the lowest settings and I havn't had this problem with later versions of Close Combat. Still, if a genie were to pop out of a bottle and offer me three wishes, one of them might be a modernized version of this game with bigger maps, more slots for vehicle and troop types, and buffed up A.I.. My aprehension is that such an effort would be flubbed with an attempt to introduce flashy 3d graphics.

This is, in my opinion, the finest game of its type ever created. If you used to play Avalon Hill games as a kid, you will recognize the idea and appreciate the execution. It is not entirely realistic, of course, since it is a game. However, when the free Real Red download is installed, the game takes on a whole new dimension. Now you've got a bunch more unit types, which expands your enjoyment immensely. If you are careful, you can preserve your original units throughout the entire campaign. That will not happen, of course, since there are some battles that are simply stacked against you to such a degree that you've got no chance. Some battles are set up so you overrun and destroy the enemy, but some battles are set up so the enemy does the same to you. There is nothing more depressing than seeing your finely crafted battle groups torn asunder by a massive enemy assault. The Real Red mod also removes the 120 mm mortar from the Russian side and the rocket launcher from the German side (although why the Katyusha was not included on the Russian side I can't explain). I like this, because these two units were able, with lucky hits, to destroy any opposing vehicle with one shot. Without them, you slug it out. Once you've played this game a few times all the way through, it does get repetative. Put it aside for a few months. You'll be back.

This PC game is a real-time strategy game, that is loaded with details not common in many other strategy PC versions. It is a 2 Dimensional (top-down) looking simulation that revolves around the players choices to help defeat either a German or Russian AI, and there is also one on one mode and internet flexibility. It was originally a part of microsoft's short-lived venture into PC games and is widely considered by most reviewers as the best title in the series. **** out of *****

This is the best of the series. THe battles, the terrain, the AI and the format are all excellent. I don't know why this series was not continued further as all aspects were enjoyable, but #3 is the best of them all.
