Yes, Yes, Yes,

This review is from: Close to Dark (Dig) (Audio CD)
For music fans that have been searching for solid performances, great songwriting and albums that play well from start to finish, Close To Dark is the holy grail. Brandi Shearer's been compared to everyone from Annie Lennox to Fiona Apple to Norah Jones to Amy Winehouse and her live show has been compared to Janis Joplin. Brandi's songs dig deep into your psyche and gut. You'll be replaying them in your head. "Heaven" is a powerful borderline creepy song. When she sings "I want to go to heaven like other little girls"...you believe her call for redemption. "Yes, Yes, Yes" is the album rocker-great opening hook. "My Boy is Coming Home" is a tale of having something in your life and you don't have the courage or the right to keep it. Brandi sings " If I could just recall the courage of my youth, I'd press my face to yours, I'd promise you the world." Longing, loving, passions running high, screaming at the top of your lungs: the parts of the sum that is this musical gem.

The other Brandi, of course, is the amazing Brandi Carlile. And with any luck and a dose of justice, Brandi Shearer is just an air-play or word-of-mouth from capturing an audience every bit as wide and committed. There is a depth to the writing and a beautiful world-weariness to the voice of Shearer, both of which belie her youth. If you can somehow weave the terms raw, sensitive and beautiful into one long braid, you'll have a sense of what to expect from this artist. Brandi's lyrics speak touchingly of the search for love and peace of mind in a very convoluted world. She's the calm (but not without her own unique undercurrent of energy) at the eye of a turbulent storm: "I wonder what they hurry for/No one sings lullabies anymore/If you were mine I'd say, 'Sleep child, sleep...'" Please listen to "Close to Home" more than once before deciding what you think, for the words and music of this release need to seduce you slowly, which, if you think about it, is the most wonderful and permanent way of having your heart captured.
