Molly has a way of expressing what I have a billion times thought and struggled with. She is the mom of four compared to my one, but still she knows what challenges I face. Not only does she successfully make me feel understood and not alone, but she also provides the hope and reassurance that through Christ and His Church we can weather this storm called motherhood and rejoice in our experiences. It is one of those books that as I was reading I would mark pages that I would like to go back and revisit, reread, and internalize to help me in my daily struggle for, as the subtitle states, "patience, peace, and perseverance".

I recommend this book to any and all mothers! With Easter (Pascha) and Mother's Day approaching, I am glad to have ordered not just one, but three copies. My dilemma now becomes how to divide those three books into the 20 copies I need to hand out to all the women and mothers I think would enjoy it.

Close to Home is not just another mothering book proposing prescriptions on how to deal with and overcome the numerous challenges experienced by many modern day mothers. Rather, through a candid description of her life as a stay-at-home mother, who desires to raise four "spirited" and spiritual children, Molly Sabourin offers the reader an invitation to enter into her story primarily because she does not have the answers. Instead Sabourin's invitation seems to be born out of her desire to encourage, as well as nurture hope in the lives of women by sincerely asking questions and reflecting on issues with which many mothers likewise grapple. Blessed with a true gift for writing and an art for utilizing language which makes her prose read like poetry, Molly Sabourin's work is an engaging piece of literature pregnant with wisdom. While a book directed towards mothers, Close to Home transcends this sphere and will be enjoyed by anyone who is journeying to overcome self and find peace. And though you will not want to put Close to Home down once you launch into it, the book should be read with consideration.

Format: Paperback
Down-to-earth writer Molly Sabourin lends a helping hand to Orthodox Christian moms in this book, Close to Home. Drawing from her own experiences with life, love, and children, she offers observations of how God is at work. Sabourin allows the reader a glimpse into her own family and the things that she is learning as she grows alongside her four children. Close to Home is a realistic look at life as a Christian mom, offering up the challenges and frustrations alongside the hope that only God can give, to moms who want to walk in His ways, amidst the opportunities afforded them...

True to Sabourin's blogs and podcast, the book is easy to read and understand, yet filled with deep truths. Christian moms will find comfort, encouragement, and a touch of humor as they read. And, after sharing the book with friends, readers will likely want to read it again...

Balancing motherhood with anything is a challenge, and author Molly Sabourin is trying to balance it with being an Orthodox Christian. "Close to Home: One Orthodox Mother's Quest for Patience, Peace, and Perseverance" is a Christian parenting manual from proud Orthodox Christian Molly Sabourin. Frank and honest, she tells her story of the overwhelming job that is being a mother, and how even finding time to pray is a challenge. Hoping to spread a message of hope to other Orthodox mothers, "Close to Home" is something to consider for these women in need.

I couldn't put this book down! This isn't a book of practical parenting advise or home management techniques. This is a candid look at what many women experience but no one talks about. Close to Home expresses in a funny, intelligent, and Christian manner the doubts, fears, and pressures of being a wife and mother. Mrs. Sabourin does not set herself up as an authority or perfect mom. She ruthlessly exposes her flaws, misguided thinking, and failures. She takes you through her struggle and inspires you to struggle harder too. This book is written in such a manner that it would make a wonderful gift for new brides and new moms. Terms and practices that are particular to the Orthodox Christian faith are explained simply without giving the feel that she's trying to convert the reader. Her quotes from Scripture or the lives of saints are relevant and do not give a "preachy" feel. I would feel comfortable giving this to pious Catholic and Protestant friends.

This is a precious book - sincere, vulnerable and comforting. I wish I had read this in those difficult months following the birth of my oldest! Motherhood can be very lonely. It's wonderful to read these honest and supportive words.
