This review is from: Close Relationships: Family, Friendship, Marriage (Studies in Jungian Psychology by Jungian Analysts) (Paperback)
I'm not an expert on psychology by any means, just a lay person who needed some help and wanted to know more about Jung. I've read more since I read this book 15 years ago, but it still stands out as an important book for me. It was a great introduction to Jung's theory and practice. It helped me understand how to interpret my dreams in a very effective manner, and it also saved my most treasured relationships. I can't guarantee it will do the same for you, I'm just reporting my experience. I no longer have my copy, so I can't give a very detailed review. Inner City Books has a great many books on Jungian thought by analysts and theorists, and most of the ones I've read have been well written and useful. In particular, _Aion_ by Edward Edinger is another excellent study of Jung's thought, an explication of his original text of the same name. But I would have found it incomprehensible without having read Bertine first. I wouldn't say Bertine's book was written to be a self-help book, and it's certainly not mushy and flaccid like so many of those genre. But I found it useful for some very critical changes I was going through in my relationships. In sum, I learned from it that I was partially caught in a net not of my own making. It gave me invaluable insight into gaining some perspective on my own psychological makeup, that of my family of origin, and that of people closest to me with whom I was struggling.
