Editorial Reviews

With over two decades of experience together on stages around the world and over a dozen major CD releases, Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King now bring the essence of their signature brand of Texas blues to Delta Groove Music. Close To The Bone presents the duo's first unplugged album, played almost entirely on acoustic instruments, and brimming with smart, clever lyrics, toe-tapping grooves and interesting, memorable arrangements. Kubek and King are additionally joined by special guests Kirk Fletcher, Shawn Pittman, Paul Size, Big Pete, Bob Corritore, Randy Chortkoff, Fred Kaplan, Willie J. Campbell and Jimi Bott.

Ying and yang, frick and frack, Batman and Robin, Kirk and Spock, Laverne and Shirley, Mulder and Scully, Bert and Ernie, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Tom and Jerry, and of course Smokin' Joe and Bnois King. Smokin' Joe and Bnois fit like a hand in a fine leather glove. Music is as smooth as a glass of top vintage Cabernet.

These guys can really pick their guitars! This recording is exquisite and the music is unfettered and elegantly done blues. Smokin' Joe's acoustic guitar comes out of the left channel while Bnois's acoustic guitar and vocals come out of the right channel, flawless and beautiful. Besides an occasional harmonica on a couple of tracks and the rat tat tat of an occasional drum, the album is dominated by the sweet acoustic melodies of the Dynamic Duo.

The lyrical storytelling on the album ranges from our bad economy, getting laid off, politics, lost love, and other everyday trials and tribulations we have all gone through and some of us are going through right now. One of the best things about the Dynamic Duo is their ability to reach us through their lyrics by singing about things that touch on all of us.

This is my favorite Smokin' Joe and Bnois album, at least from the six or seven I have previously listened to. What I like most about this album is the mellowness of the two acoustic guitars and how well the two guitarists' different styles wove the melodies tightly together. In other SJ and Bnois albums, Smokin' Joe's guitar sometimes can be fairly harsh and aggressive which is OK in small doses, but personally I can only take searing, ripping guitar solos in small dosages.

This unplugged album is good to the very last chord. Highly recommended. Two thumbs up.

It's been a long time coming, but Joe and Bnois have finally recorded the acoustic album they've been wanting to do. Apparently, all the other record publishers (Blind Pig, Alligator, etc) had been telling them, "Just keep doing what you're doing."

While that was great, kudos to Delta Groove for greenlighting this fresh and extremely listenable collection of songs that are clearly close to the heart (or the bone) of Bnois King, who is the primary lyrics writer of the duo.

Partly, the album is two clean (not a piezo pickup in sight) acoustic guitars wielded by two men with distinctive, complementary styles, and partly it is an infusion of fresh sounds provided by several guest musicians from California, like Kirk Fletcher and Lynwood Slim.

I love all the tracks on this album, but a favorite of mine is Bnois' heartfelt tribute to his mother, "My Best Friend."

Speaking of Bnois, his voice is right out front, moreso than it's ever been on a Smokin' Joe record. It is strong and clear and showing no signs of age.

As for Joe, he seems to have developed even more mastery with the acoustic guitar, with lots of innovative and rhythmic picking.

This is my favorite Smokin' Joe and Bnois King album in many years. Buy it!!

I am a big fan of Smokin' Joe for his amazing guitar licks and Bnois King for his silky vocals. This collection stands out for acoustic guitar harmonies in a variety of blues, some quite unique -- both men contribute to the fire. The lead riffs of Smokin' Joe are unusually precise for acoustic; no sloppy fingerwork or picking. I've never heard better. Clever lyrics contribute to a collection worth repeated listenings. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys blues and great guitars.
