This book is expertly plotted, interesting and well written. Gilbert creates characters that live and breathe. Quite enjoyable and paced for his time, meaning it is not a blow things up and edge of your chair drama, but a well pace, carefully built up story that can be savored.

Too "Close" for Comfort!,

Rue Morgue Press is reprinting some very good books from the past. I consider this mystery to be one of them. Like most books that deal with all the inhabitants of a particular 'closed' area, it is a bit intimidating to get your bearings as far as being introduced to all the characters. Fortunately, there is a listing at the beginning to which you can refer until you get them straight. It is the kind of book that one wishes for a couple of cold rainy days and a warm fire with which to enjoy the story. It concerns the canons in a rather small, somewhat cloistered settings and begs a memory of the saying, "Familiarity breeds contempt"...at least with some. An intelligent book that sometimes reminded me, in a general way, of Gaudy Night....but with men. Am going to order another of the author's books, as he weaves a great tale. |
