Following an incident at sea, 50-year-old Captain Eugène Marius finds himself without employment or purpose in Marseille, paying fruitless daily visits to the port’s shipping offices. Consumed by guilt, spurned by his family, and faced with the futility of life away from the waters, Marius seeks solace in alcohol and the arms of a prostitute, but is unable to keep his mental and physical deterioration at bay. About the Author
Born in Liverpool to Irish immigrants, James Hanley left school at an early age to become a sailor, and his experiences at sea informed many of his works. Only recently has this original, uncompromising novelist started to be reappraised as one of the finest English writers of the 20th century.
