3.0 out of 5 stars One is brought "Closer" to his former opus....
The first pleasure I had of hearing Josh was streaming radio from Quebec over the net, with "Hymne à l'amour" - an excellent interpretation of Edith Piaf's colossal song. After buying his first self-titled album because of the high standard he set by that song I heard, I was expecting huge things from "Closer", but I feel that I was sadly let...

What I've found, after MANY spins through the entire CD, is a much more exciting, vibrant collection than his previous studio and live releases. "Closer" is the union of Josh Groban's great voice, first-rate material perfectly suited to his strengths, and the heart of a singer who sounds like he'd rather wade into the audience than front an orchestra. And he's not just a singer; he co-wrote some excellent songs in this collection, plays piano, and could have (but doesn't) play drums as well. In other words, there's a lot more music in Josh Groban than just his voice, and in interviews, he's expressed his wish to bring out more of his talents in future releases.

Back to the music: it's excellent. While the voice alone could carry these songs and hold your interest, the variety of moods, arrangements, even genres, makes this collection a huge step forward from his strong debut CD. This is an adult contemporary CD for rock fans, a pop CD for classical music lovers, and a great CD for multi-genre fans who like strong voices and smart music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Josh Groban....extended edition, May 10, 2005
This review is from: Closer (W/Dvd) (Dig) (Audio CD)
With the additional tracks Mi Morena and She's Out of My Life, Josh shows even more versatility to his second studio album, Closer.
Never ceasing to be amazing, Josh fills every note with a musicality and passion that many young pop stars seem to be incapable of commandeering.
Josh's musicality clearly shines through as he shows his ability to not only sing like an angel but also compose lyrics, orchestrate arrangements, and accompany himself on the piano.
A must for fans of his first album and his unique style.

Josh Groban's sophomore effort, Closer, is definitely a true testament to his natural musical talents. The album makes you FEEL the music. Closer is an amazing emotional journey with endless words to describe the feelings it brings out of you - passion, romance, love, sorrow, pain, excitement, mystery, dark, power, etc, etc...very few artists can leave chills down your spine. Every song on this album is strong on its own merits, except Broken Vow - the previous live version is definitely better. Remember When It Rained is the album's standout, showcasing Josh's vocal range and styles and the inserted piano solo (by Josh) is a perfect surprise. Overall Josh has started to find his own style and direction on Closer. Its not just about "That" great voice but more of a close to perfect and exquisite blend of voice, song and emotion. If you have ears, you should have this album.

PS: The two additional tracks on this limited edition version is worth the purchase on their own. AND if you were lucky to snag the "Internet Lmited Edition" (which is out-of-print), the two EXTRA songs on there are great. I have all three versions myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars ADDICTIVE, March 27, 2004

This guy's voice is weirdly addictive. I really love the foreign language songs sung in a classical style and when he uses his deep theater voice.(His voice sounds a bit higher and does have a different quality to it than on his first CD. Oh, please don't become a tenor!) However, this is NOT a classical CD. I don't enjoy full blown classical. There is definitely a different mood to this CD than his first but it is just as intoxicating. I actually bought the Internet Version from his website in order to get 4 bonus tracks. (Like I said, I'm addicted) Of the 4 tracks I like Mi Morena, which is on the Limited Edition, the best but I don't skip any of them. The DVD shows Josh Groban to be a sweet young man who seems serious about his craft but kind of goofy yet shy as a person. (He's thinking a lot more than he's saying) In a way, it makes the power of his singing voice seem even more striking.(Looks older singing at the end and then these boyish pictures flash on. Looks like 2 different people!) I would have liked to see more of the musical work. Since I know nothing about how music is made in a studio this would have been very interesting to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars HE DID IT AGAIN!!!!!, November 12, 2003
This review is from: Closer (W/Dvd) (Dig) (Audio CD)
I actually bought the internet only version for an extra ten bucks and it was completely worth it. Josh Groban, David Foster, and company have done it again. Absolutely incredible follow-up album. There is not one song on this CD that you'll want to skip. This has joined my other two CDs of his in a permanent place in my CD carousel. Another masterpiece!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Once again, beautifully done, November 12, 2003
This review is from: Closer (W/Dvd) (Dig) (Audio CD)
I've been following Josh since a time that seems very long ago... no one knew who he was when I mentioned his name, there were zero websites devoted to him, and no music stores had information on this amazing young man when I tried to track him down. I waited nearly two years for his debut album to hit stores. But I knew, since the first moment I saw him sing with Sarah Brightman (La Luna in Concert) he had something special. In short, it was worth the wait. Now with this amazing second album in stores, he has millions of fans and deserves it!

"Closer" explores more types of music than the debut album; a few seem *almost* pop-ish, we get to hear Josh sing in French, and we do, in fact, get a little "closer" to who Josh is and the direction he is taking with his music. (It's quite a thrill to hear Josh on piano and some songs take on a more personal meaning since Josh helped write lyrics and/or music for three tracks.) Fans of the first album will not be disappointed-- we still get the soaring vocals we've come to love and the classic sound you can't find on the radio.

Never heard of Josh? Order it! Love Josh? Order it! Either way, this album is full of the most amazing music you will ever hear. *Tara

I was profoundly touched by Josh Groban's sophomore CD closer. His vocals are truely stellar and as a singer I can only imagine the work and training he has dedicated to this album. The musical orchestration adds to the emotional impact of this album. I especially enjoyed the song Mi Morena by Martin Page. One of the few tracks that was not written/ produced by David Foster the track is lovely. This song is poetic, lyrically beautiful, and masterfully sung by Josh Groban. I would definitely recomend this CD to anyone who enjoys beautiful singing.
