Format: Hardcover
Straddling the line of where architecture meets purpose, especially in a subject as sensitive in religion, is no easy task, and Closer to God delves fearlessly into this issue. Among the highlights are what architecture firms Vicens + Ramos, Trahan Architects, and Rafael Moneo have done. Some clear trends exist -- the utilization of natural light, of minimal interior design, of scale and size -- exist, and then there are other buildings that will blow your mind. Top notch.

I always like what Lukas Feireiss and Gestalten do, and this book is no exception. Closer to God is a top-notch collection of contemporary architecture built as religious institutions, and it's fascinating to view how traditionally old mediums are redefined in the contemporary context. And with the controversy surrounding the building of Muslim community center in New York and in Moscow, this book and its underlying questions are extremely timely. This book sensitively digs deep into the ethos of how a place of worship affects the community around it, from a smart architectural angle, together with interviews and profiles of architecture firms that are redefining the very essence of what
