Biography

Joy Division formed in Salford (near Manchester, England) as an immediate reaction to punk: to be precise, singer Ian Curtis, guitarist Bernard Sumner and bassist Peter Hook decided to pursue music as a direct result of seeing the Sex Pistols famously play at Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall in 1976. Forming eventually as a foursome (with drummer Stephen Morris) in 1977, Joy Division would… Read more in Amazon's Joy Division Store

5.0 out of 5 stars I Understand..., September 15, 2006
This review is from: Closer (Audio CD)
The first time I heard this I thought it was the worst thing ever recorded, an off-key vocalist doing a very bad Jim Morrison impression over monotonous, horrid music, I laughed uncontrollably! Then I listened again, this time in the dark, with headphones on and it gradually began to sink in..."Closer" is a hypnotic, ice cold death letter from someone who was already gone, but not yet buried. True, Ian Curtis was not a very good singer but his lack of technical ability renders his performance raw and affecting while the music washes over you and relaxes away the inherent terror and depression of the words. Sad, Depressing and utterly addictive, "Closer" is a groundbreaking work that rewards the open minded listener with a cathartic experience few LP's can. A Classic.
