Shawn McDonald quite simply owns one of the greatest combinations of voice, melody and songwriting alive today. What makes it so intriguing is how few know about him. The passion in his voice and lyrics makes you sit up and take notice. It is sad so few are aware of this "pearl of rare price".

I ordered this cd the first week it was available due to no store selling it in my city (best buy, fye) and I have had it in my cd player every since. Upon initial listen, I found a few standout tracks but as I continued to listen to it closer, there is not a track on here that I don't like. Some stand out more than others but all songs are definitely listen worthy. Every day a different song stands out & speaks to me so I can't list just one as my favorite song. Shawn Mcdonald is a great artist who has grown and continues to make great music. I have been waiting for this album to release since November of last year when I heard the lead single "Closer". That song touched my heart & so does every song on the album.

Shawn McDonald is one of the freshest artists to come out of the last decade in terms of both the secular and christian music industries. After releasing two phenomenal albums, "Simply Nothing" and "Ripen", it looked pretty hard to create an album to ever reach those depths again. "Roots" pulled it off well in that it was a different direction for Shawn (one that personally I thought worked great).

"Closer" goes in the direction of sound that "Roots" established. The pop gets more infectious, and Shawn succeeds in his unique blend of harmonizing his voice, acoustic skills and a tinge of electronic/pop. The sound works for me; the actual content does not. Shawn admitted that this album is a collection of songs he wrote during his dark years following his divorce. Upon hearing that, I was eager to see how this would sound, expecting something a little darker and earthier than he's gotten into in the past. Instead, what was created was a radio-friendly pop album that restrains itself in emotional and spiritual depth; a good handful of songs are ones that we've heard every other artist come up with (including Shawn himself----'Take Hold' from "Ripen" succeeds in musical power that 'Don't Give Up' doesn't even come close to). Many of the songs (however heart-felt they may in reality be) are sadly lost in the "christianese" music that floods the rest of the CD rack and radio.

Some songs work really well: "Closer", "Hope", "Better Way", "Something Real". The rest don't sound full of the conviction and heart that I've come to enjoy from Shawn. After a divorce with children involved (and you're in the ccm spotlight), I would expect a little more depth from the man who has written such pieces as "Simply Nothing" and "Waltz in 3".

It's hard to listen to Shawn McDonald and not think about how far God has brought him in such a short time.
While certain artist's spend years polishing their craft and paying their dues as backup singers, musicians, etc.,Shawn never picked up a guitar until 6 years before his first album came out......not even a decade ago.
Instead he paid his dues out on the streets.Abandoned by his parents as a child and raised by his grandparents, the hurt of the rejection drove him to a life of crime to the point of facing 9 felony charges. That's when the change came,he gave his life to the Lord and things began to look up.
With a testimony like that,it's not easy to seperate the man from his songs as they reflect so much of his past....and present new life in Christ.

BETTER WAY (4/5)- Starts off with a clean steady beat and will have you tapping your foot in no time.Half "rapped"/sung,it's a good album opener that talks about the scary state of the world and that "something's got to change",and there is a better way.
HOPE (4/5)- Really great mid-tempo song about hope that is "rising",flows wonderfully right into the next cut.
CLOSER (5/5)- I really love this song, from the first time I heard it I knew it would be a personal favorite.Desiring to be closer to God,a spouse, son, daughter, just any loved one?
The song doesn't really say who,but I think we've all been able to relate to those feelings at one time or another.
FAITHFUL (4/5)- The tempo gets cranked up a couple of notches during the chorus and is a catchy pop tune all around.
The song is about someone who is struggling in life ('I need you now")and is trusting in the Lord to be faithful "what if I finally trust that your love remains" is the concluding verdict.

I purchased this album after hearing a few of the songs on K-Love radio. I found Shawn's lyrics to be truly inspired by God, his voice to be smooth and the beats to fun and appealing. The entire album is great and will not disappoint.

I had the chance to see Shawn McDonald about a week ago, and when he came I was reminded of him and his album Simply Nothing. I have his subsequent albums, but that one spoke to more than the others. After seeing him live and hearing he has a new CD out, I checked it out and was very happily surprised. One thing about Shawn is he gets creativity, but he also gets emotional depth and although his albums are not marketed as worship albums, they take on a tone and a mode that is completely worshipful, and spiritually moving. He always is so challenging in his lyrics about how we should be completely reliant and dependent on God for our day to day, and not just look to him when we are at our worst. Deep, good album and truly a good listen.
