Superb songs about contemporary living,
By burghtenor (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Closer Than Ever: Original Cast Recording (Audio CD)
What can I say? CLOSER THAN EVER is probably the best musical revue ever written. It's a collection of 25 songs about the complications, joys, and woes of everyday living in America. This is the only show I've ever produced and directed, since I wanted to share it with as many people as possible. Since I first heard the score, I always include at least one song from the show in every concert I give!THE HISTORY: Maltby and Shire didn't want the song to die, so they slowly created a roster of "story songs" for use at a later time. In 1989 (at the same time Maltby was also working on the English lyrics to MISS SAIGON in London), these songs were combined with other songs Maltby and Shire had written over the past 30 years (with alterations) to make the new revue, CLOSER THAN EVER. THE LYRICS: What are these songs about? I like to say that the songs cover the day-to-day aspects of everyday living: relationships, childcare, and Dan Quayle. A few examples: Over the years, Maltby has been known to insert rather cheesy lyrics into otherwise good songs. Only two egregious examples are in this show. The opening number asks at one point, "What's in the skies from Boston to Florida? / High-rises rising, each being horrider." In "Miss Byrd," the character proclaims that she gets so excited, "that's when I start to go `La dah di dah.'" THE MUSIC: THE SONGS: The weakest songs of the show come early in the first act. "Like a Baby," included on this recording, has since been replaced by the more humorous "I'll Get Up Tomorrow Morning," in which a man explains his attempts to deal with the stresses of work, children, and marriage. If I were to direct the show again, I would attempt to replace "What Am I Doin'?," the song of a man obsessed with a woman no longer interested in him, with "I Don't Remember Christmas" from Maltby and Shire's earlier revue, STARTING HERE, STARTING NOW. THE RECORDING: There are two problems: first of all, some of the orchestration choices are poor. For example, a cheap synthesizer steals some of the tenderness from Lynne Wintersteller's "It's Never That Easy." Secondly, some of the numbers don't have the pizzazz that I would expect after seeing them performed live by amateurs. Perhaps some of the cast members were tired on the day of the recording? Only Sally Mayes seems to give all of her numbers the full intensity they deserve. Despite the problems with the recording, this is still a must-have for anyone who loves musical theater. You won't find another collection of songs - with such liberal doses of wit, intelligence, and creativity -- anywhere!

This was an off-Broadway revue that appeared in 1989; each song tells its own story and very effectively so. I love the music for its complex and varied but accessible and sometimes haunting melodies, vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements, and its wide range of styles from jazz to folk to pop to traditional Broadway. There is an almost inexhaustible supply of simple/profound, witty/clever, wonderfully rhymed lyrics. It's hard to accept that all of it is sung by four very talented vocalists.I've been listening to this in the car for about a week and am still learning the words. While there is a "doors" metaphor running in and out of several songs, there is very little repetition; all of the choruses have variations and expansions; it never stands still, which is very much in tune with the theme of continual change. It's very hard to pick favorites, but "Like a Baby", "Patterns", "Life Story", "If I Sing" and "Next Time" are right up there. Something that is also striking is the dynamic range more typical of classical than of popular music. For this musical and (for Maltby's cryptic crossword puzzles in Harper's), I'm indebted to this amazing musical duo. If Maltby or Shire is reading this, thanks to you both.

I am a lighting designer by trade and had the wonderful experience of working on this show. I must say that I was singing along night after night. I LOVED IT ! some of the songs are hard to follow the words (She loves me Not) and so I actually spent $ 50 and bought the entire SCORE.. I loved it that much.. Hearing a show night after night may get tiresome... but not this one. If you like shows that are about 98% music (these characters sing the show, they don't just break out into song) I highly suggest this CD for everyone the trunes are catchy and modern you'll be singing along in no time !

Another Maltby and Shire success,

I became interested in finding this CD after hearing one of the songs from it (It's Never that Easy/I've Been Here Before) in a production of another one of their musicals, Starting Here, Starting Now(which if you haven't heard, you should). The sung struck me- it was so powerful. All of the music in this recording displays strong emotions. The different beats used, such as the dance Tempo in Fandango, the bar-stlye singing in There, the scat in Back on Base, along with many beautiful ballads offers a variety of listening enjoyment. They are also wonderful for singing and audition pieces if I could ever find the sheet music(if you know where I could find it, could you email me?). I strongly recommend this CD. It is a lot of fun.

Great collection of Musical Theatre songs,
By
This review is from: Closer Than Ever: Original Cast Recording (Audio CD)
These days great writers for the musical theatre are few and far between. David Shire and Richard Maltby have been writing songs together since the late 1950s. To date they have had only two book musicals reach Broadway... BABY and BIG. Neither show was a success but hopefully they will write other shows together. These are two very talened men who know how to construct songs that are the equivilent of one-act plays. Some funny ("You Want To Be My Friend?") some angry ("The Bear, The Tiger, The Hamster and The Mole"), some wistful ("One of the Good Guys") and some filled with longing ("She Loves Me Not.") These songs give the performers plenty of subtext to make the songs actable. ANd fortunately we have 4 very fine actor/singers on this 2 CD set. The notes give the histories of each song, but you don't really need to know any context. The songs stand on their own.Anyonw who is even considering a career writing or performing in musical theatre should get this set and listen. The music is very enjoyable..tueful in fact. But the lyrics will reverberate long after the Cd has ended. My personal favourite is "Life Story" - Listen to this song as an example of what I am trying to explain above. A well-written character study. And "If I Sing" is a terribly moving piece. I can easily understand actors who ahve done this show raving about how much they enjoy singing these songs! Get this CD and see if you do not agree that these are outstanding songs. And I await a new show from Messers Shire and Maltby! (If you enjoy this disc, seek out their earlier revue called STARTING HERE STARTING NOW which is also available on RCA Victor.)

Once you hear Closer Than Ever, you'll be playing it over and over to hear every note and learn every word. Although targeted to "mid-life crisis" adults, there is much here to appeal to all ages and anyone in transition.

Interesting, Different Musical,
By
This review is from: Closer Than Ever: Original Cast Recording (Audio CD)
"Closer Than Ever" is one of the best Off-Broadway musicals to be produced, and won a much-deserved Outer Critics Circle Award for best Off-Broadway Musical. It's actually more of a revue than a musical, since there's not really a plot. Rather, "Closer Than Ever" is a collection of songs on themes relating to getting through life. "You Wanna Be My Friend?" is a funny song that vocalizes what most people think when a relationship is ended and the person ending says "I want to be your friend." "Fandango" humorously explores the difficulties of raising a child when both parents have full-time jobs. These are just a couple of examples of the fine songs you will find in this recording. "Closer Than Ever" is perfect for those who enjoy musicals and are looking for something different from the usual Broadway fare.

This recording was a chance purchase about 10 years ago in a NRM. 10 years later, my wife and I are still gaga over this collection. Included are tunes to make you laugh, cry and think. The performers are fabulous, and the songs memorable. Fabulous!!

I first heard these songs in an off broadway show on cherry lane in New York at the age of 21. It is without doubt the best show that I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. I loved these songs at 21, now that I 30 I love them even more. Do your heart and soul a favour and buy this CD.

As a singer, I find the music and lyrics inspiring. Yes, it does speak volumes to the "boomer" generation, but anyone with a sense of love, longing and humor will truly enjoy this!
