Martin Simpson takes American Gospel songs and gives them a wonderful blues twist. Mark Twain said one of the things he wouldn't like about heaven was the angel choirs. This is no angel choir. This is gospel a la mid-western praries, truckers, small cafes and bars, rough edges. God on a slide guitar. Well worth the listen.

I have several Martin Simpson albums. Each one is masterful and musical, and they live well. You can play them for years.

This album certainly fits that mold. Simpson brings his creativity and skill to all of these wonderful old tunes. It is a sweet, pleasant album.

But that's not why I'm talking to you now. What I want to tell you about is the next-to-the last cut, a mix of Bright Morning Star and Watch the Stars. If Martin Simpson never did another thing in his life after performing this piece I'd put him up for guitar sainthood. The other tunes on this album are holy and sweet and thoroughly likable, but this one walks on water . . . dances on water. It is one of the most beautiful and moving guitar pieces I'll ever hear.

This is possibly my #1 favorite CD of all times. If you like guitar music, you will love Martin's interpretations of these spiritual tunes. He is a true genius at his art.

As an ordained minister I have a deep love for gospel. This CD is a great collection of acoustic guitar spiritual favorites. The CD is great for enjoying while resting and contemplating.
