Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Because a kind of goofy charm imbues this second novel from the author of Fag Hag , readers may be happily hooked despite a few shortcomings. Lionel Frank, the titular hero, is a gay man whose closet is tightly locked lest macho co-workers at a Chicago advertising agency discover his sexual orientation. Fortunately, Lionel can unburden his soul to Yolanda, his outspoken neighbor-cum-confidante who lives for science fiction and possesses worldliness and naivete in perfect proportion. (Lionel, in fact, sometimes looks bland compared to Yolanda.) There is no dearth of funny one-liners as Rodi plays fast and loose with topics ranging from the men's movement to the Catholic church's stand on homosexuality. His barbs are scattershot, however, his humor often more rambling than pointed. But when Lionel is summoned to a Wisconsin vacation with agency honchos and their spouses (Yolanda plays the beard), the novel approaches the high comedy it aspires to. The farcical final scenes, wherein I Love Lucy meets The Dating Game , will gladden the hearts of closeted homosexuals and hopeless romantics; there may even be traces of an inspiriting lesson lurking in this closet.

From Library Journal

Chicagoan Rodi presents his second installment on gay life in the Nineties. Like Fag Hag (Dutton, 1992), Closet Case is a light-hearted novel carrying a simple story line: be yourself. The protagonist of the novel, Lionel Frank, is a closeted gay advertising executive leading a double life. In order to avoid derision from his homophobic colleagues, he plays the role of a straight man during the day while at night he searches for the perfect mate via 1-900 telephone sex services. The tangled web of deception in his life grows comically with each turn of the page. Accompanied by a colorful cast of characters, including Latina neighbor Yolanda; her boyfriend, a wannabe men's warrior; and a Transylvanian nationalist named Emil, Lionel embarks on a voyage of self-acceptance and fulfillment. The wild conclusion to Lionel's journey occurs during a weeklong retreat hosted by a corporate client in the backwoods of Wisconsin. This book is fun to read; recommended for general and gay collections.

More About the Author

Robert Rodi (b.1956) was born in Chicago, a town seething with literary and musical energy, and he has spent his life immersed in their currents. His first novels, which quickly gained him cult status, were deftly drawn satires of the city's gay scene. While continuing to write fiction (most recently, "The Sugarman Bootlegs") he's branched out into nonfiction, the better to share his enthusiasm for the world of canine agility (in "Dogged Pursuit") and all things Italian, specifically the great Tuscan horse race, the Palio ("Seven Seasons In Siena").

He also writes comic books for both Vertigo and Marvel, pens a self-described "guerilla lit-crit" blog about Jane Austen called "Bitch In a Bonnet", and covers the local performing arts scene for The Huffington Post. He's a performer himself, being an auxiliary member of Chicago's esteemed monologuist ensemble BoyGirlBoyGirl; he's also the front man for the fusion rock band 7th Kind (whose CD "Sea Monster" is available on Amazon).

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Do It!, April 8, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Closet Case (Paperback)
The last time a book made me laugh out loud it was "Fag Hag," also by Rodi! This guy has a real nack for turning the sad into the hilarious! Who cares if the character is so pathetic that you just want to slap him, his contiuous misadventures amuse! This book deserves to be read in one sitting! Give it a chance and try not to take it to heart! Rodi helps us laugh at ourselves and the limits we go to in order to avoid revealing who we really are, just to discover it's all pointless and actually viewed upon as a 'joke' by those "in the know." Just buy it, read it, do it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good farcical romp, March 15, 2002
This review is from: Closet Case (Paperback)
If you are looking to deconstruct this book in a gay studies class, I can assure you that you will leave the class very frustrated and with a skewed understanding of gay culture. On the other hand, if you want a good read which will make you laugh and read on, then this might be the book for you. Rodi's protagonist, Lionel, reminds me of the Bertie Wooster of P.G. Wodehouse. The craziness inherent within the scheming and plotting of the characters in such a farce is part of the fun. Coincidences too wild to imagine are perfect for such a book. Good readers, pick up this book and enjoy some plain nonsense.

4.0 out of 5 stars CLOSET CASE - Hilarious! Rodi's best, December 10, 2001

I give it 4 not 5 only because I have to admit that Rodi's books are pretty silly. You have an ad exec firmly in the closet, his flamboyant hairdresser, his conservative, gossipy coworkers, his army dad, his fundamentalist Christian sister, and his downstairs Latina neighbor and her 'gay straight man' boyfriend. Not to mention the guy from Transylvania...

I could totally see this being made into a movie. Very much a French farce feel to it (think The Birdcage or The Closet). I just read it again for about the seventh time, and all my friends have borrowed it. A fun read.
