Pricey but nostalgic,

At $30, this DVD is VERY expensive for what it is. It's a blue-backed DVD that starts automatically, has no menu, no features, and has one or two video-static blips during the feature. The film itself is fun. I remember watching this in the early 1980s on VHS and had been craving to see it again for some time. Some things that I'm nostalgic about fall flat when I rewatch them. This one was still entertaining to me twenty years later. The humor is in the same vein as Hardware Wars (though, not by the same creators): juvenile, packed with jokes, and a style of goofiness that is of its day. High ratings for the product, low ratings for the price. Only recommended for those who like to own things instead of finding them free online.

Madcap nostalgia rom the point of view of a little kid scared by Close Encounters,

A long time ago this reviewer was a little kid deathly scared of one movie: Steven Spielberg's close encounters of the Third kind. So what did I think when I was a kid and watched this parody? I laughed my butt off! It was crazy, it was silly to the max, and it even had the same font as the movie it was doing a parody of!
It made me laugh so much because it poked fun at a lot of the iconic scenes in the film: The vacuum, the Railroad crossing scene, the scene at the base of the.... umm... devil's food cake tower, or something. But even though the title (Close Cases) really doesn't make sense, it still is very funny and is a bit of very fun camp that's a lot of fun. It's no feature length film, but it's still pretty fun to watch after all these years.

I saw this on HBO Many years ago. I have looked everywhere for it and found it on Amazon.com. It sure is funny. You have to have seen the Movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. My favorite thing is when the Scientist said he used to be a scientist before he became a bad actor. 3.14 is Pi how funny. Thank You for bringing back great memories

Greed strikes even the little person,

I'm going to be absolutely amazed if ANYONE other than relatives buys this video -- it's priced higher than "UP!" (probably the best animated movie made so far) and lasts about 1/10 the time (it's only 12 minutes long).
Is it any good? Well, no, not really. It was cute and even a little clever about 30 years ago, when "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind" first came out. But like all satire, it has dated badly, and today plays about as well as an after midnight Saturday Night Live sketch (I have it on videotape and looked at it recently for this review). It's the sort of thing that you like to see once just to have seen it, but at this price, for this material... let's just say I hope the copyright holders are wearing masks, because they are certainly trying to rob you. In these days of tough economy your money will be spent FAR better elsewhere. Then again, I'm probably preaching to the choir (because, as I said, I just can't imagine anyone even *wanting* to buy this). |
