I was iffy about this item after ordering it and THEN reading the reviews. There were good things said as well as complaints about the assembly, size of cubbys, durability etc. I received my order yesterday, took the box to my kitchen with a screwdriver and a hammer in hand (equipped with my common sense) and had this item put together quickly and durable! I was very pleased with the construction and then feared "now the shoes won't fit..." WRONG! Ladies, I wear a size 8 and have a pair of high wedges in one cub about 3 pairs of sandals in another. Now grant it I can not fit my high heel boots cuz by the time you bend over the legging there isn't room for the other boot, so that takes 2 cubbys. Pack your shoes the way you buy them in a box, with one flipped over onto the other and you won't have any problems! (Unless they are BIG boxes in which case doesn't common sense tell YOU they won't fit?) I ordered another one last night immediately! Now that the front door is organized I look forward to one in my closet. I have nothing but good things to say about this item.

My husband and I bought FOUR of these to help maximize the use of a hall closet that was being used for nothing more than hanging coats.

We took the coats OUT, assembled these by stacking them 2 x 2 (two on the bottom, two on the top). They turned out GREAT for their purpose (we're using them for overflow cabinets to keep extra supplements, tea, coffee, etc.).

Here are our tips:
1. Use Gorilla Glue as you assemble the outside structure. Makes them much, much stronger.
2. Use a power drill/screw gun, rather than just a screwdriver, to assemble--speeds it up and you'll get a better fit.
3. Make sure the finished edges are facing outward and upward (you'll see what I mean). The unfinished edge is the bottom.
4. Work on a hard floor to get a good, square assembly. Verify everything's "squared" before you nail on the cardboard backing.
5. We glued all parts of the bottom shelves together. On the top shelving units, we DID NOT glue the bottom shelf in place. We DID assemble it and then nailed the backing on the top shelving unit, EXCEPT for the very bottom shelf, which we then removed before stacking the units. Why did we do this? Just to get two "free" shelves, which we were able to install with some extra shelving brackets we had on hand. I'll post a photo in a few days so you can see what I mean (photo posted 4/7/14: see "Customer Images").
6. Use the dowels provided to "stack." If you want a permanent installation, Gorilla Glue the top unit to the bottom.

I bought two of these for my wifes closet. Once assembled I used silicone cement to glue the shelves in place. This prevents the shelves from sliding around. I laid them on their side on the top shelf of her closet. Works great for sweaters and all the folded things that go on that shelf and have a tendency to tumble over or out of the closet when one item is pulled out. These units are cheaply made; the backs are not solid but of cardboard but they work like a dream for this application so, five stars from me. I'm going to buy two more for my closet.

Assembles in about 15 minutes using a hammer and screwdriver. Materials are decent for the price; could be a bit stronger. A pair of shoes fits in each slot (up to about size 12), if you put them in right -- just need to turn one shoe over and around so it fits together with its pair like like yin and yang. Makes it easy to have 15 pairs of shoes in a closet and just reach for them.

UPDATE - 4/1/14: I still have these shoe organizers and drawer sets (two drawers, stacked, in one unit). I have two of each side-by-side in my closet. They are still brilliant, and strong. I'm surprised they've held up so well, but super happy since they're so useful. Love them. I actually came back to get another and felt it appropriate to update my review.

____________________________________________________________

I bought this organizer for my shoes, which have been jumbled in a giant box since we moved last summer. It went together easily, and I was surprised how sturdy it was! I didn't put the back on because I wanted to be able to let air circulate, where they're holding stinky shoes and all... LOL. I wear a women's 10 and all of my shoes easily fit in pairs, into a single cubby. Only shoes like my hiking boots and mid-calf-height boots with 3" heels had to go each shoe in their own cubby, which I didn't mind at all since they were still off the floor, and seperated cleanly. I am sure the product will last, but only gave it 4 stars because it's new in my home. If I'd had it for 3 years and it was still going strong I'd have given it 5 stars. We like this product so much we are now considering getting more for our coat closet, as well as my husband's closet. The only complaint I have at all is that the product came missing a screw, so we had to use one we had on hand.
