Editorial Reviews

Review

“The photographs in the book are beautiful.”
(Home & Living, Examiner.com)

“I am in love . . . This is a beautiful book. It was a visual pleasure to look through . . . and, easy to imagine that I could and, more importantly, would make the projects Ellis offers.”
(Sew News)

“Cloth is thoughtfully written and beautifully photographed. This would be a hard book to keep stashed in your studio. It could just as easily own a space on your coffee table, where you could share with your guests your affection for textiles.”
(CraftGossip)

“This exploration of the history and beauty of fabric is a unique addition to sewing collections, and savvy sewists will enjoy the challenging proposals.”
(Library Journal)

“This book is truly beautiful. It is beautiful enough to get someone who knows nothing about sewing to learn to sew.”
(Getting Stitched on the Farm)

Cloth is an inspirational guide to the beauty, history, and utility of natural textiles. Woven throughout the five main sections—cotton, wool, silk, linen, and hide—are more than 30 breathtaking sewing projects that make the most of each textile’s properties.”
(Spoonflower Blog)

“Lavishly illustrated and full of practical tips, Cloth embodies the William Morris aesthetic by which Ellis lives: like the objects in its pages, it is both beautiful and useful.”
(Shelf Awareness)

“Artisan projects sewn from linen, cotton, silk, wool, and hide capture a modern tastemaker’s interpretation of traditional sewing endeavors.”
(Notions)

With beautiful illustrations this book goes into depth about the different fibers and their history. There are beautiful pictures that
inspire you to create one of a kind items for yourself, as gifts and for your home. I loved the wool overnight bag and can see
this is a gift for a special friend.
The book has patterns for the projects in the back and also a listing of suppliers to complete the projects. This book will be
a great addition to your craft library and I am thrilled to have this in my library. The pictures are so well done that I am
a bit tempted to copy them and use them as art work in my sewing room.

The book is great...bigger and more substantial than I expected. It's part textile text book, and part how to. It's a book that you won't get through in one sitting, and I will definitely be reading cover to cover. I feel as though I have found a kindred spirit in my love of old textiles. I bought this book for the section on linen. I have a LOVE of antique linen and hemp and this is the only book that discusses sewing with these fabrics. That being said, I am excited by many of the other projects as well...especially the leather! The best part...it has actual full size patterns in the back of the book! It doesn't mention that in the description that I can find. I would have bought it new for fear that they weren't included with my used book...luckily for me they were there, uncut and in perfect condition!

The projects: Thumbing through the book, I do see several pillows, tote bags, and scarves...things that perhaps don't need a pattern or a book to guide you, but it is definitely about the fabric. I've never sewn silk so some guidance would be appreciated. There are also some projects that I haven't seen before...a wool overnight bag, linen slippers, a wool ottoman, not to mention the whole section on leather. (Note: I did already notice an error in the measurements of the overnight bag...I hope this doesn't indicate more to come)

I would say that if you love vintage and antique fabrics, and would like some ideas on what to do with your stash besides fondle...then buy the book. I think that my aesthetic really matches that of the author in palette and in style. If you look at the picture on the cover and go wow...then buy the book...you will be saying wow all the way through.

UPDATE: So I made the first project in the book...Canvas Market Tote Bag.

I bought this to gift a friend at Christmas because it is just so beautiful. I'm kind of a cloth-hoarder, but don't do very much sewing any more. This is a very nice job of publishing. The projects are varied and the instructions specific... and it is very nice that variations are included.

My friend seemed quite pleased with it, telling me on New Year's what she was planning on doing.
