Biography

Jamaican born Shaggy (Orville Richard Burrell) is the dancehall/reggae singer who is noted for his distinctive, raspy sub-baritone voice. His primary success has come from his third studio album Boombastic (1995), which produced the No.1 (UK) single "Boombastic", but it was his fifth studio album Hot Shot (2000) that proved the most successful with the misogynistic hit single "It Wasn't Me".… Read more in Amazon's Shaggy Store

Editorial Reviews

Clothes Drop, is a varied and invigorating explosion of tough rhythms, with Shaggy's unique rough-and-smooth toasts devoted to music, women, fun, and where appropriate , the spirit. Featured tracks include 'Shut Up And Dance', with a contribution from the Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am, the wickedly catchy 'Supa Hypnotic', a steamy team-up with vocalist Nicole of the notorious Pussycat Dolls entertainment troupe, the title track 'Clothes Drop', devised by legendary Jamaican rhythm section Sly and Robbie, 'Would You Be' a tribute to the classic R&B beat-ballad style of the Isley Brothers and Al Green, the futuristic 'Don't Ask Her That' produced by Scott Storch, and 'Ultimatum', produced by Shaggy's long-time collaborator Shaun Pizzonia, known as Sting International, whose creative direction unifies the album. Also includes the 2 UK exclusive tracks 'Goodie Goodie' & 'Sexy Gyal Whind'. Geffen. 2005.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beware, falling clothes, September 20, 2005
This review is from: Clothes Drop (Audio CD)
Dancehall's favorite Boombastic Angel is back with another scorching sizzler, and with a collection of hot guest artistes to boot. This is the sixth studio album from the Jamaica-born Orville Richard Burrell (nice name change Shaggy) the guy who gave us "Oh Carolina"; "Boombastic"; "It Wasn't Me"; and "Angel", among others.

From the time I put this album on, I started hitting the dance floor, which was a bit hard to pull off as I happened to be at the office at the time. Fortunately, there were other folk similarly addicted, including the boss. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to dock somebody's pay for dancing to Shaggy during office hours anyway.

"Clothes Drop" starts with a steel pan intro, and erupts into something sounding like an adult Dub version of "Candyman" from Willy Wonka. The next song is the dancehall ready "Ready Fi Di Ride", a rude dance track; followed by "Broadway" which samples "Tribal Natty" with its "I'm broad, I'm broad, I'm broader than Broadway" hook, and it never sounded better.

Next up is the first single "Wild 2Nite" featuring Olivia of G-Unit, followed by "Back in the Days" with old pal Rayvon; and the excellent "Supa Hypnotic" with Nicole Scherzinger of the red hot Pussycat Dolls.

He takes it down a notch with the reggae ballad "Would You Be" with Brian Gold, encourages us to "Stand Up", and then lo and behold, he preaches to us in "Repent" which is one of my favorites on the album thanks to the background vocals and chorus.

And there are more great tracks too - like "Ultimatum"; "Shut Up and Dance" with Will I Am of the Black Eyed Peas; and "Don't Ask Her That" a funny track, once again with Nicole Scherzinger.

Depending which version you have, there are some bonus tracks too, and the UK version has a whopping FIVE extra tracks.

This is one of my favorite new albums, and one I have been playing non-stop for hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Superb!!!, September 29, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Clothes Drop (Audio CD)
This is another wicked album from Shaggy. It had me rocking from start to finish! I really like all the tracks on the album. For me the main stand out tracks were:

Clothes Drop(really like the beat);
Ready for the Ride; Broadway (this is my second favourite track -the Barrington Levy sample is wicked!);
Wild 2nite (Olivia from G-Unit charms this one up!);
The 2 combinations with Nicole Scherzinger, Supa Hypnotic & Don't Ask Her That, are both fun songs with cool beats;
Stand Up, Gone With Angel and Repent convey great messages;
Love Me Up(Nice beat and well written);
Ultimatum is a pretty cool laid back R&Bish song;
Shut Up and Dance delivers (as is often the case with the Black Eyed Peas' work);
Ahead In Life (my favourite song!! It's hilarious!! Guess what he's talking about? I think this is on par with the big hit It Wasn't Me!!!);
Road Block (sweet song; great to hear Rik Rok again!); and
Letter to My Kids is a really cool little song with an even cooler beat.

I am sure the music lover will enjoy this album. It's a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars I WAS DANCING SO HARD, MY CLOTHES DROPPED!, September 27, 2005
This review is from: Clothes Drop (Audio CD)
well not really...but it is some funky stuff. This was my first Shaggy CD (although I was always grooving with "bombastic" and "luv me luv me".

Songs have heavy beats and very easy yet fun to listen to. I just love Mr. Luva's voice.

the CD is a bit top-heavy, but good enough to get 5 stars.
