The Cloud Collector's Handbook,
By
This review is from: Cloud Collector's Handbook (Hardcover)
I was looking for a way to connect with my 10 yr old grandson. This book
has been just the thing. We have been able to use the book to gain points as we "collect" different types and formations of clouds. We compare notes and meet at McDonalds to discuss and see what we have collected. I have learned alot about clouds and have come to appriciate them more. The book is well written and the pictures are great. There is even a "cloud" web site to go to. Share a cloud with your children or grandchildren. It's fun!!

What a delight!,
This review is from: Cloud Collector's Handbook (Hardcover)
Who would have thought that you could get so much enjoyment out of a little book about clouds? I got this as a gift and am completely enchanted. I thought I already knew a lot about clouds but this book has taught me so much! In particular, I knew the major groups, but there are dozens of cloud varieties that I am learning to recognize. Fun fun fun!

This little handbook is a great extension from the Cloud Spotter's Guide. It is compact and robust enough to cart around with you, and has the same wit and concise information that made our Founder's guide so enjoyable. It suggests that as you accumulate clouds, you can take photos of them, and link the notes to the photos. This will allow us to compete aggressively with other cloud spotters in amassing beautiful and exotic clouds. I have only just started, but I think this is going to turn me into a cloud connoisseur. The photo examples in the book are very clear, and it has an image index at the back to help you work out what has taken your fancy.

More then a Helpful Handbook,

Yes, this book was intended to be a handbook to register cloud sightings, a method of identifying clouds by their configurations, and a means to tech not only youngsters but also interested adults the fascinating formations that water and air and sun and moon can create with enough ongoing similarity that they an be classified.
But there is another aspect to this book by Gavin Pretor-Pinney that makes it so special, and that is the fact that it contains some 150 splendid photographs of could formations discussed. These photographs, the courtesy of many photographers around the world, are dramatic and could easily be in a stand-alone book of images as a cloud monograph. So combining the adventure of cloud collection with Pretor-Pinney as guide and consultant together with these world class photographs in rich color makes this a book that would be a welcome addition to the library of anyone who spends time gazing upward - 'Out on the lawn I lie in bed...'(Auden). Now I see the clouds,
This review is from: The Cloud Collector's Handbook (Hardcover)
I saw this in the NY Times and some of the cloud pictures at nytimes online so I recommended it to our kids who have 2 boys 9 yrs & 11 yrs. They took it on a family camping trip to the Florida panhandle, then loaned it to us for a sailing trip (our first sailing trip) in the Virgin Islands. We saw cloud formations we had never seen before--and could identify them! Neat book for any outdoors person or someone like us--retired folks with an apartment balcony and lots of sky.

Great little book (fits in your coat pocket!). Well written with nice explanations and a great sense of fun and humor, as anyone looking in the clouds would probably appreciate. I like that there is a spot where you can jot down an image file name for each type of cloud if you take a picture of one. Now, go buy this book and start collecting clouds!

This is a cute collectors book about collecting clouds. The beauty is you leave them in the sky but mark down in the book when you have seen certain clouds, like birdwatching.

I am a member of 'The Cloud Appreciation society' so this book is particularly welcome and incredibly useful for me. Not only does it contain excellent photographs of clouds but, it has pages for cloud spotting information entry date, location etc. The book is small enough to be easily portable in pocket or ruck sack and is a sturdy hard cover design. An Excellent handbook for all of us who love clouds.

Some people just like to know the names of things.
If you are one of these people, you will be able to name all the clouds you see. |
