Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7?As with other volumes in this series, the amply illustrated short chapters could be a tempting plus for some young readers. A minus is that Red Cloud is less well known than the chiefs in the previous books. Most of the black-and-white photographs are of people and are clear; however, two of them are just plain puzzling. The overall style of writing is that of college-freshman research paper, with footnotes to sources. The map is virtually useless as text references are not shown. Appendixes include a one-page glossary of terms probably known to most young readers; a 10-item list for further reading (mostly out-of-print adult books); and a serviceable index.?George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield

From Booklist

Gr. 4-8. This slim volume relates what is known about the personal and public life of the famous Oglala Sioux chief Red Cloud. The author begins with an account of the Fetterman Fight, the 1866 battle between U.S. soldiers and Sioux forces led by Red Cloud that resulted in the closing of the Bozeman Trail. Sanford also describes Red Cloud's early life and his longtime struggle against government officials who repeatedly broke the promises guaranteed by previous treaties. Although the deviation from strict chronological order may be confusing to some readers, short chapters, large print, and numerous black-and-white illustrations will make this accessible to reluctant readers. The glossary, bibliography, index, and source notes will aid report writers, too. Kay Weisman
