A stunning tour de force of songwriting, arranging and performing by Richard Barone (formerly of the Bongos). "Clouds Over Eden" reminds me of John Lennon, and Barone is one of the few pop/rock figures whose work can stand up to such a comparison. These songs are personal, but not in the unbearably self-absorbed "confessional" style so prevalent these days. Superb craft combined with substance and style--an unbeatable combination.

As good as it gets,

I'm stunned and honored to be the first person to post a review of this album. This was my favorite CD the year it came out. Several of the cuts tingle my spine with their passion and instrumentation, even in 2004. Just as fresh today as it was then. How is it that he has avoided the limelight all these years?
A major talent waiting to be rediscovered.

It astounds me that this fine album is only available as an expensive import. Why isn't it in print in America & in the CD collection of anyone who appreciates melodic, catchy, memorable songs of substance? Yes, the hooks are here, with a couple of potential hits-in-the-making, if they'd only gotten the deserved airtime; but there's depth here as well, which is never heavy-handed, and always woven expertly into the songs.
It's no accident that the Beatles & John Lennon in particular come to mind while listening -- but Richard Barone don't settle for mere nostalgia, or pale pastiche of far better masterpieces. No, it's more the feel & tone of the songs, which are informed by past masters, but strike their own original note. This isn't some Lennon-wannabe, but Richard Barone, front & center, singing about loss, grief, and acceptance, in a distinctive voice that's definitely all his own. It's an exceptional collection from beginning to end, with my special favorites being "Within These Walls," "Nobody Knows Me," and the gorgeous, haunting but hopeful title track. Even in a long career of making consistently strong music, this is a standout. Most highly recommended! |
