Book Description

University Museum Monograph, 103 January 1, 1999

Explore the early days of Paleoindian archaeology in this engaging retrospective of Edgar B. Howard's Southwest Early Man Project, 1929-1937, cosponsored by the University Museum and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. This book contains a detailed analysis of the world-famous Clovis artifacts, discovered among the bones of mammoths and extinct bison in the Dust Bowl of eastern New Mexico.

Blending traditional and current ideas, the authors offer an extended reference to the lifeways of early humans in the Americas, accented by a series of unique insights on their origins and adaptations. Well appointed with photos, line illustrations, and schematics, Clovis Revisited is essential reading for professionals, students, and avocational enthusiasts.

About the Author

Anthony T. Boldurian. A native son of South Philadelphia, Dr. Boldurian is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Since 1978 he has been an active researcher in the fields of Paleoindian anthropology and lithic technology. A former curator of the Clovis Site National Historic Landmark, he has written many journal articles and a monograph on the archaeology of Blackwater Draw and the Southern Plains. Dr. Boldurian is a Chancellor's Distinguished Teacher, acknowledged for his effective teaching to students of all ages.

Dr. John L. Cotter is Curator Emeritus, American Historical Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Although having made his seminal contributions in Historical Archaeology, as demonstrated by an extensive bibliography and numerous awards, Dr. Cotter began his work in archaeology by excavating at the Lindenmeier (Colorado) and Clovis Paleoindian sites. Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Cotter has researched and published in Paleoindian studies, adding much to our contemporary view of Clovis origins and adaptations. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laboratory Archeology at Its Best, December 16, 2003
By
Chris Moore (Indianapolis, IN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clovis Revisited: New Perspectives on Paleoindian Adaptations from Blackwater Draw, New Mexico (University Museum Monograph, 103) (Paperback)
Clovis Revisited brilliantly addresses a major concern for modern archeology-- the interpretation of old museum collections in light of new archeological evidence. Archeology is by its very nature an adventuresome out-of-doors endeavor that is seen as a somewhat rugged "back to nature" kind of science. Behind this thin veil, however, is the true nature of archeological discovery-- the lab work. Unfortunately, many of the world's greatest archeological discoveries were made fifty to one hundred years ago, before the advent of modern archeological lab methods. The Blackwater Draw site in New Mexico, the type site of the Clovis culture, is one such site. That problem, however, was solved by Drs. Boldurian and Cotter in Clovis Revisited. This text provides a reanalysis of all the materials collected from the Blackwater Draw in the 1930s and 40s and systematically describes all the Clovis type specimens. This book is a must have for anybody, professional or otherwise, who is interested in the Clovis culture and the first discovery of the Americas.
